I release him and push back to my feet. He slumps against the wall, gasping for air.
Cassian keeps his gun aimed at Corrado while I retrieve mine again. Time to step up my game. I’ve given this shitbag enough time already and enough chances.
“Well?” I kick him in the leg.
“I told you. I always get a message with the job. He never uses the same number or the same associate.”
“Then how the fuck do you know the job is from him?”
“The code. 1685. Only he is supposed to know it. He gave it to me.”
I glare down at him, my gaze scathing, my rage boiling. I don’t even know why I’m surprised. Corrado has always been a snake. Always looking for an opportunity in the darkest of alleys to fuck someone over. And now he’s going to fuck me over again.
The thing is… I knew this would likely happen. That he wouldn’t tell us shit. I was just hoping I’d scare him enough into breaking.
“I honestly don’t know how to find him.” Corrado sniffles, wiping the blood away from his nose with the back of his hand. “Haven’t physically seen him in about five years. You have to believe me.”
I pull the trigger on my gun and shoot him in the leg. He howls with pain, and a wide-eyed look of terror invades his expression. He didn’t think I was going to shoot him. Well, that set him straight.
“I told you—”
“You have told me nothing.” I cock the hammer again and look him over. “Now, I suggest, if you want to keep your life and the lives of your family, search that brain of yours and tell me how I can find Moretti. You have two minutes.”
The lost look that enters his eyes tells me everything.
Fuck. The miserable bastard can’t give me an answer. He’s actually telling the truth.
He doesn’t know how to find Moretti. At least not in the next two minutes.
“Lev, I don’t know. I—”
I shoot him in the other leg just for pissing me off, then I crouch back down and press the gun to his chin. “You disappoint me, Corrado.”
He pants, not even looking at the blood spurting from his leg. “Please. Don’t kill me. And don’t kill my daughter. Leave my wife and my daughter out of this.”
Men like him make me sick.
I’m a monster, and I accept that. I don’t pretend to be something I’m not. But him…
No.
The only reason he’s begging for his wife and daughter’s lives is money and power. He needs both of them alive. They are assets to him. Especially the beautiful, fiery daughter.
Her marriage to Danillo is supposed to bring Corrado several million.
I gaze down at the bastard and frown. Looks like I have to move straight to plan B, but I just had an idea. Something creative.
“Lev, please.” He coughs.
“Alright, Corrado,” I reply. Cassian’s gaze flicks up to me, curious. I ignore him. “You get to keep your life. For now.”
“Really?” Corrado sounds hilariously hopeful. I almost laugh. “That’s it?”
“No. Of course not.”
Doom re-enters his eyes. “What, then? What more do you want?”
“Everything.” I smile again.
