And I already knew what it was.
Heather.
For whatever reason, Xay had never really cared for her like that.
He wasn’t disrespectful to her. He just always got short whenever her name came up, which irritated the fuck out of me because Heather was my favorite cousin.
We grew up close.
She was having her first baby.
Of course we were going to her shower.
He’d live.
“You ready?”
I looked at Nesha.
“Do I look ready?”
She looked me up and down.
“You look like you trying to get pregnant again.”
“Don’t put that shit on me.”
I turned toward the mirror by the front door.
I did look cute though.
I had on high-waisted dark jeans that hugged everything they were supposed to, a fitted cream long-sleeve crop top that stopped just above my waistband and showed a little strip of stomach, and brown heeled ankle boots. Nothing crazy.
Just enough.
Four months postpartum and I was finally starting to feel like myself again.
Not completely.
But enough that when I looked in the mirror, I saw Samantha before I saw somebody’s mother.
My hair was down in loose curls, makeup soft, gold hoops in my ears and a little brown bag across my body because carrying a big purse plus a diaper bag was fucking ridiculous.
Nesha walked behind me and smacked my ass.
“See.”
I jumped.
“Bitch!”
“That’s why Xay don’t wanna go. He know somebody uncle at that shower about to be looking at you.”
“Good.”
I turned around.
“Maybe somebody uncle wanna fuck.”
