“Don’t let her put that in her mouth.”
“I know how to watch a baby, Avery.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Sam, she literally has a block in her mouth right now.”
She looked down.
Carter was indeed trying to eat the corner of one of Michael’s big foam blocks.
Sam snatched it.
“Girl, if you don’t—”
I laughed before I could stop myself.
Sam looked at me.
And for half a second, it felt normal.
Then it disappeared.
That happened sometimes.
We weren’t cool.
I didn’t expect us to be.
I didn’t know if we’d ever be again.
But we were sisters.
And unfortunately, we’d managed to make our children even more related than they already would’ve been.
Carter was Sam’s niece.
And her children’s sister.
My baby would be her nephew and their brother.
Collin too.
Try explaining that shit without needing a fucking diagram.
But the kids didn’t know our mess.
And Sam refused to punish them for what we’d done.
That was probably more grace than I deserved from her.
I sat on the other end of the couch.
“I had my ultrasound today.”
Sam glanced toward my stomach.
“Everything okay?”
