“Yeah.”
“I mean really.”
Her expression changed.
She knew what I was asking about.
Two weeks after Thanksgiving, Samantha called me from her bathroom.
Pregnant and she caught it early as hell.
Apparently after four kids, she knew her body well enough that something feeling slightly off was enough for her to test.
She didn’t hesitate.
Didn’t ask what I wanted.
Didn’t turn it into some emotional conversation about what we were doing or what it meant.
She knew she wasn’t having another baby.
Especially not her husband’s brother’s baby while still married to her husband.
She handled it early.
I respected that.
Her body.
Her decision.
Only thing I made sure of was that she wasn’t handling it alone.
After that?
We got real fucking serious about making sure it didn’t happen again.
She nodded.
“I’m fine.”
“No pain?”
“No.”
“Bleeding?”
“Levin.”
“I’m asking.”
“And I’m answering. I’m good.”
I studied her.
She softened.
“Promise.”
