“Why?”
Levin looked at me again.
I smiled.
“Welcome to my morning.”
He put Michael down.
Zion and Amari heard him and came running next, and within seconds all three of them were around him talking at the same time.
I watched for a second while I shifted Serenity to my other side.
It was still a little strange seeing Levin back around.
Seven years was a long fucking time.
Zion had been a baby when Levin went away. Amari hadn’t even been born. Michael definitely hadn’t. Serenity hadn’t been a thought.
Now he was standing in my kitchen with all four of them knowing exactly who Uncle Levin was.
Life was funny like that.
“Y’all let that man breathe,” I said. “And don’t nobody ask him for no money.”
“I wasn’t!” Zion said.
Levin reached into his pocket.
I pointed at him.
“Don’t start.”
“What?”
“You know what.”
He pulled out his phone instead.
“I was getting my phone.”
“Mhm.”
He looked at me.
I looked at him.
For a second neither one of us said anything.
Then he looked toward the counter.
“You cook?”
“No, I just like standing in front of skillets for decoration.”
“Smartass.”
“You want a plate?”
