Checked on my kids.
Talked shit with Nesha.
Took pictures with Heather.
Helped somebody move gifts because apparently being four months postpartum meant everybody forgot I had just pushed a human out too.
I was halfway through a conversation with my mother when I heard—
“Bitch, I’m so glad you finally fucking made it!”
I turned.
Avery.
She had Carter’s carrier in one hand and the diaper bag over her shoulder.
“I’m sorry!” Avery laughed. “Carter was being Miss Fussybritches.”
Heather waddled over.
“Give me my baby.”
“Your baby? You got one right there.”
I walked over before either one of them could touch Carter.
“Move. Come to Auntie.”
I unbuckled her and scooped her up.
“There go my pretty girl.”
Carter looked up at me with those big brown eyes.
“Hi, Auntie’s baby.”
I kissed one cheek.
Then the other.
Then her forehead.
Avery rolled her eyes.
“See why she spoiled?”
“Shut up.”
“Every time you see her, you do too much.”
“Because she’s perfect.”
I cuddled her against my chest.
Carter and Serenity were damn near twins at this point with how close in age they were. I had so many pictures of the two of them together already that my phone probably thought I had five kids instead of four.
I bounced her for another minute before Avery reached out.
