“In turn for what?”

“A cool twenty million dollars. Ten for each club.”

Sergei exhaled.

“A significant amount of money. What were you supposed to do?”

“Torch your warehouse, which we did.”

“And nothing else?”

“At the time, no. That was it. Of course we didn’t count on you determining who started the blaze.” He lifted his gaze. There was anger in his eyes and when met with my soulless ones, he lowered his, conceding to my power.

Good boy.

“Then what happened?”

“Just before you stormed the clubhouse, another offer was put on the table.”

“Which was?”

“To kidnap Isabel Dayne.”

“Which you agreed to.”

“Yes, but only under the conditions she would not be tortured or killed. We do have scruples, Mr. Aristov, no matter what you think.”

“When was that supposed to happen?”

“New Year’s Eve.”

“And the plan?”

He laughed. “We were simply the man’s muscle, not his confidant.”

“A man you never met.” He wanted me to believe a man of his stature hadn’t insisted on meeting the person he was doing business with?

“Never had the pleasure.”

“Who did you talk with?”

“His lieutenant.”

I was already growing weary of learning almost nothing except what I’d already determined. “Describe him.”

“Huge guy. Six foot five, muscular. Bald. Tattoos.” When he shifted on the seat, he winced. The man was in obvious pain.

My body tensed although I hid my reaction. “And you know nothing about this Butcher.”

“I know that he has a full plan of revenge.”

“And how would you know that if you never met him?”

“The bald man talked.”

His choice of words was fascinating.

“You’ve told me nothing I don’t already know, Zane. None of this is of any value. That is unless you know his identity, which is the only reason I could believe he’s intent on ending your life.” I nodded to Sergei as I stood, casually dangling the weapon in front of me.
