CHAPTER 12
JUDGE
Something is wrong.
My hand shoots out toward where she should be, but the sheets are cool to the touch.
Immediately, I’m up and out of bed. I yank on a pair of sweats and grab my gun before rushing from the room. My phone is already to my ear, ringing through to Ghost, when I come to a sudden stop in my living room.
“Prez,” Ghost mumbles, sleep in his voice. “What’s wrong?”
I barely hear him as my gaze snags on my girl through the large glass doors leading to the backyard.
“Prez.” This time his voice is hard, alert. “Something going on?”
“No,” I grunt. “False alarm. Get back to sleep. See you at the clubhouse later.”
I hang up and place my phone and gun on the table before heading toward the door.
Her back is to me, her red hair dancing in the breeze. She’s dressed in the silk robe I bought her. When I brought her here and she found the closet full of clothes I’d bought her, she was upset. I didn’t understand until I realized she thought they belonged to another woman.
Needless to say, I changed her mind real fast. No other woman has been in my house, and no other woman ever will.
I watch her, wishing I could see her face.
Is she happy here?
She didn’t fight me when I practically threw her on the back of my bike and brought her home. But our start wasn’t conventional. I know she’s not going to trust easily. The scars from Demon cut deep. I fully intend on healing each and every one until all she can remember is my touch, my kisses, and my cock.
The temptation to join her tugs at me through the glass. I want to pull her into my lap and promise her that no one will ever hurt her again. Sharing a life with me won’t be without challenges or risks, but I wasn’t lying when I promised her the world. There’s a whole club willing to lay down their lives for her.
Unable to fight that temptation any longer, I slide open the door and step into the cool morning air.
She doesn’t move. Doesn’t even acknowledge me, and that puts my teeth on edge.
Was she thinking about running?
No. She would have been gone by now.
And I would have been looking for her.
I settle into the chair and scoop her into my lap, wrapping my arms around her as she sits sideways across me. She lifts her eyes to mine, and relief washes over me at what I find there.
Awe.
Adoration.
Desire.
It’s so easy to read her now.
“What are you thinking, Little Mouse?” I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “Talk to me.”
She trails her fingers along my bare chest, her eyes following the movement. “It’s crazy, isn’t it?”
“What is?”
Kaylie sweeps out her hand. “This. I came from a trailer park. Sometimes I didn’t know when my next meal would be. My dad gambled away all our money—even the stuff I hid for emergencies.”
