“That’s my baby,” he murmured.
One minute, he was crying softly to himself, and the next thing I knew, he was whipping out his phone to record the screen. Once he was done, he FaceTimed Chy and his grandparents because everyone was extremely excited. I was in between crying and laughing. Crying tears of joy but also laughing at his grandparents. They were busy trying to figure out how all of them were on a call at once. After Chance ended the call, we promised to visit them and would bring a few copies of the sonogram.
I was absolutely sure our baby would be very spoiled, and I was excited for our little one. Having such dedicated family support is truly a blessing.
Before we were discharged, we received 3D images and a sealed envelope with the gender. We planned to have our sisters do a small reveal for us.
By the time we left the doctor's office, I badly wanted seafood. I would assume that’s why Chance asked the nurse whether eating seafood was safe, since I had been craving it so much lately. I could practically taste the butter. I settled back into the passenger seat once we were on the road, heading home.
Chance was still on cloud nine by the time we got home. I had told him that I wanted crabs, but I also wanted to lie down. Being pregnant left me winded as fuck. I could only imagine how much worse it would be once I really started to show.
He helped me get settled in the house before he left to retrieve the goods. I couldn’t wait for him to come back with my seafood. I headed to the kitchen to make my seafood dip. The place he was going to had dips for sale, but I didn’t like anyone else’s. I didn’t add ketchup to mine. I kept it simple: Mayonnaise, garlic powder, white vinegar, crab seasoning, a squirt of mustard, and a few dashes of hot sauce.
After I finished straightening up the kitchen, I decided I wanted to relax in bed, which turned into a nap. My eyelids were so heavy; I was tired of fighting to keep them open.
I woke up to blaring alarms. “Ugh, what the fuck,” I whispered as I sat up in bed. I was so disoriented. There was nothing like being jolted out of sleep by a loud-ass noise you weren’t expecting.
I grabbed my phone to check my notifications, but I could barely make out anything because of the alarm.
My phone rang, and before the first ring completed, I answered.
“Hello,” I said loudly, trying to show he could hear me.
“Are you messing with the gate again?” he asked.
“N… No. I was asleep, and the alarm woke me. Can you...” I was still yelling into the phone when it finally disconnected. “Turn it off,” I said in my normal tone.
“Who’s at the gate? Are you expecting someone?” I asked.
“Naw, I was about to ask you.”
“No. Just my crabs,” I said absentmindedly. It was crazy how the craving had me locked in. I went to sleep and woke up with crabs on my mind.
“Go in my office and check the monitors. I can’t see them all from my phone. “Fuck!” he swore under his breath. Only the main gate sensor was triggered.
He stayed on the phone with me until I reached his office. The walk through the hallways was eerily quiet. When I entered his office, nothing was out of place. I entered the password to access his security software, and once it was up, I let him know I was in.
“Okay, which screens are flashing red?”
“Ummm.” I bit my bottom lip as I looked at all twelve screens. “Just the front gate, like you said. I don’t see movement on any of the screens. Maybe it was a possum, because unless it’s another ex-con attempting to jump your gate, I don’t think anyone is crazy enough to try,” I said, trying to lighten the mood.
“Haha. You were that crazy,” he countered.
“And I’m not ashamed of it. I’m a rare type of crazy. You are lucky to have me on your side.”
“Talk to me nice, baby,” he said in a low tone. “I can’t deny that you are correct. I am. The. Luckiest.”
“Ard, now. Hurry home. I miss you.”
“Which may be true, but I believe you really want these funky ass crabs,” he joked.
“Same difference.” I shrugged as if he could see me.
“Keep your phone on you. I should be there soon. They just called my order number.”
“Okay, drive safe. I love you.”
“I’m always safe, baby. I love you more, Trouble.”
