I knew they would be pissed, but I didn’t know how to support both them and myself. It was easier to disconnect. We sat around and talked about everything that happened two weeks ago. Sage was incredibly dramatic, laughing so hard she was crying. Jamie addressed the situation seriously when she mentioned the fight between Chance and Chase and found out that Chance wasn’t involved in his brother’s sick game. I initially thought Chance was on some fuck, fuck, pass type shit. I wish I could’ve seen Chance fight his brother—I’d pay good money to witness that.
I felt bad, only a little, for setting his house on fire, but at least he knew better than to lie to me if we were able to move past this.
“Have you heard from him? Chance?” I asked Jamie.
“Yeah, he’s been pulling up on me occasionally to check in. He wanted to make sure Chase ain’t come back.” She paused. “Oh, and to get an update on you. He was surprised when I told him you had cut me off too.”
“Cut us off,” Sage added. I sucked my teeth.
I was about to say something, but my breath caught and a lump rose in my throat. This time, I knew something was coming. I clamped my hand over my mouth, trying not to vomit all over those people’s hotel. I sprinted to the bathroom. Jamie and Sage were running behind me. I didn’t make it to the toilet, so I had to settle for the sink.
“Girl, what did you eat?” Jamie asked. She held my locs up so I wouldn’t accidentally throw up on my hair.
I gagged a few more times, but nothing came up that time. After I gathered my breath, I finally answered her. “Nothing today, but I still can’t keep shit down.”
They looked at one another as I rinsed my mouth at the sink. When I noticed their expressions in the reflection, I turned to face them. Both of them just stared at me, with a knowing smirk on their faces.
“What the fuck is wrong with y’all? What are y’all looking at?”
Sage poked my titty, then used both hands to lift it gently, making them bounce a little. I swatted her hands away.
“Ouch, Sage! That hurt, hoe. I just threw up. Does it look like I want to play Freaky Friday with you?” I moved past them, and they followed me out of the bathroom.
Jamie looked suspiciously at me. “Her poking your big ass titties hurt?” She raised a brow.
Confused, I answered. “Yeah, I guess. They are sensitive as fuck since yesterday. I’m probably bouta’ come on.”
“When was your last period?” Sage asked.
“First, you’re playing with my titties, and let me guess, you wanna’ see my pussy next? What? You my new OBGYN or something?”
That may have been a tad bit much, but I was feeling irritated as fuck right now.
“Oop! And you extra spicy.” With a huge smile, she looked at me, then at Jamie. She was kinda scaring me. Her smile seemed never-ending. It reminded me of that movie Smile.
“You know what, I ain’t mad at it. Jamie should have beeeeeen made me an aunt, but I’ll accept it from you. Plus, I like you with Chance. Outside of his little hiccup of a lie.”
It was as if she had poured a bucket of cold water over me. I turned away from them and searched for my phone on the cluttered bed. Frantically, I threw off the comforters, pillows, and sheets until I spotted it. I grabbed it, unlocked it quickly, and with no time to find the app, I swiped down and typed 'FLO'.
FLO was the app I relied on to track my period. When I opened it, my heart sank. I sat on the bed, still holding my phone. I looked at the screen, but I wasn’t really seeing it anymore. I felt ten times worse than I had just thirty seconds earlier.
Sage took my phone from my hand, and I fell back on the bed, hands covering my eyes.
“Mmm, mm, mmm.” She held my phone. “Period is weeks late.” She shook her head.
I quickly re-accessed my timeline. I had my period the week before Chance took me to my first studio session, so that meant I should have come on two weeks ago. Fuck. It was the studio session. I had been taking my birth control pills, but that day and the day before I didn’t take them because I was so caught up in Chance that I forgot about my own basic needs, and now look at me.
“Oh my god!” I shouted in defeat.
“Girl, don’t bring my lord into this,” Sage said. “This is some radio drama.”
“I’m already hip. Just call me donkey of the day. 95.5 WPGC would have a field day if I called up there to get advice.” I paused momentarily.
I picked up my phone, brought it to my ear, and continued as if I were calling in to the station.
“Hi, my name is Justice, or dumb-ass hoe. Anyway, I was locked up for five years and fell in love with a correctional officer. We fucked around, and he promised me a happy ever after, but that didn’t happen. Instead, he ghosted me, and I went to find him after my release, only to discover it wasn’t my correctional officer I had found. Nope. It was his twin brother, who was pretending to be him because he… I don’t know why he lied yet, but now I’m pregnant by a nigga I can’t even say I truly know for real. Oh, let’s not forget the correctional officer was also fucking and dating my sister when I was locked up.” I paused, trying to recall if I was missing anything. “Thennnn, there’s this shit about my dad being a crackhead.”
The room was silent. I dropped my head into my palms and tried to breathe slowly. I could feel I was on the verge of a breakdown. Tears filled the brim of my eyes, so I blinked quickly. That only made them fall. Once Jamie and Sage noticed, they both came over and sat on either side of me. Both started rubbing small circles on my back.
