“Umm… Why?”
“Because you’ve been so fucking secretive and I want to know. I need to know. What is his name, Jamie?” I felt my control slipping.
My emotions were all out of whack. I felt like I could’ve fought an army of people and then cried tears that could fill the Pacific Ocean.
“Okay. Calm down. His name is Chase. Why?”
“When did you meet him?” I dodged her question again.
“Justice, I don’t have a problem telling you whatever you want to know, but I need you to cut the attitude.”
I inhaled and exhaled loud enough for her to hear. She was getting me mad as fuck.
“Ard.” I pushed past my feelings long enough to tell her everything, and I do mean everything.
“What the fuck, Justice! I had no clue, I swear! I didn’t even know he was a fucking correctional officer. This is crazy.”
She was just as lost for words as I was.
“Okay. Fuck. I’m sorry. I didn’t tell you about him because it didn’t really matter at first. After one of our last visits, he was leaving the building the same time I was. We bumped into each other and talked for about an hour outside the prison. He told me he was visiting his little sister. He never mentioned working there, so there’s that. I will be honest. When you were released, he started acting differently. He wanted me to stay at his house more and more, and then he didn’t want to meet you. But I thought maybe he read about your case and didn’t want to be associated with you. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, sister. I wasn’t keeping anything from you on purpose, and I didn’t know he knew you or that he had a brother.”
It’s as if we thought the same thing at the same time. “If I wasn’t tied up with arguing with Chase daily, I probably would’ve been able to meet Chance instead of just hearing about him. I would’ve… Wait? You mentioned that they were twins. So, they’re identical?”
That made me chuckle because it went without saying.
“Duhh. How else could I fuck them both and not notice a difference? Well, there was a difference in the bedroom, but I thought Chance just had more freedom now versus the quickies we had in jail.”
“Okay, I didn’t need to hear that.”
“Yeah, well. Whatever. Okay, now what’s his connection with Daddy?”
“Now, that I don’t know. I have heard rumors of Daddy being strung out. I didn’t want to tell you because at first it was just that, but then I saw him, and he definitely was outside begging for change at the gas station by the old house,” she admitted.
“When did you notice?”
She went quiet for a minute. “Hello?”
“Ugh, yeah. It was shortly after you were locked up. He lost the house first and then his mind. It got so bad that he broke into Ma’s house and tried to steal what he could. Luckily, her boyfriend at the time was there and managed to get Dad out of the house. He did have to put paws on him, though.”
“What the fuck was going on out here when I was locked up? Why didn’t you tell me that?”
“I didn’t want you to think it was your fault.”
“And why would I have thought that?”
“Well, I know you think the world of him, and it could seem like he got on drugs after your sentencing. At least that’s what people were saying.”
“I guess. Anyway, I’m at ACE, and I need to pick up a few things. I need time away from everyone, even you, for now. I’ll let you know when I feel like being around anyone. Oh, and do not give my location to anyone, Jamie. If you do, I will turn it off,” I said seriously.
“Okay, Justice, I get it, but don’t stay underwater for too long. You know I’m here for you always.”
“I do. I love you.” I hung up before she could say anything else.
When I looked up, I had parked and was sitting in front of ACE. My muscle memory brought me there because I honestly didn’t recall the drive.
