TJ crooked his finger at her, and when she leaned in, he flicked her ear.

Skye’s hand shot up. For one second, a look of shocked outrage covered her face.

But once her brain caught up, she grinned. ‘Rude.’

‘But did it work?’

She nodded begrudgingly. ‘It did.’

When she led the way inside the building to the front desk, TJ followed just behind her. He kept his eyes peeled, looking for Holden – just in case. This was, after all, her father’s home turf.

They signed in at the sleek desk in the lobby, then used the passes they were given to scan through the waist-height turnstile to the elevator bank.

The elevator spat them out on the twenty-ninth floor. They were greeted by an aluminum sign with Camden, Horowitz and Snow laser-engraved on it. A large white desk sat off to the side. A pristinely turned-out secretary in a sleek business suit sitting behind it asked, ‘May I help you?’

‘Skye Marchant. We have an eleven o’clock with Michael Camden.’

The secretary checked her computer. She smiled, said, ‘Right this way.’ As she led through the immaculate offices, she asked, ‘Are you related to Holden?’

Skye nodded. ‘I’m his daughter.’

The secretary gushed. ‘We all just adore your father.’

Skye just smiled, said, ‘That doesn’t surprise me.’

The secretary directed them to a waiting area with plush white leather sofas and a full wet bar. Skye’s attorney, Mr Simcock, was already there, waiting for them. He heaved himself out of the sofa and came to greet them. He held out one hand and when Skye took it, the attorney closed both of his over Skye’s. ‘Are you sure about this?’

‘Yes.’

‘As your late grandmother’s attorney, I have to warn you. The risks—’

‘I know.’ Skye smiled kindly. ‘But this will work.’

Mr Simcock nodded. ‘It’s officially your responsibility. So, we’ll do it your way.’

At that precise moment, the secretary came back. ‘Mr Camden will see you now.’ Her eyes flickered to TJ. ‘Due to the nature of your meeting, he advises that only family and legal representation be present.’

TJ geared up to argue. There was no way Skye was facing this alone.

But he didn’t have to. Skye linked her hand with his and said, ‘He’s family. My fiancé.’

The secretary smiled at that. She held out one arm. ‘Right this way.’

Their trio started down the hall. But right before they stepped into the room, TJ leaned down and whispered, ‘Fiancé?’

Skye just smiled up at him. ‘It seemed more defensible than boyfriend.’

‘At some point, we gotta make good on that lie.’

Skye winked at him, said, ‘I’m just waiting for you to ask, Jesse Jones.’

Skye grinned at TJ’s hungry look and stepped past him into Michael Camden’s corner office. The room was large, with heavy antique furniture that was strongly incongruous with the rest of the stark, modern suite she’d seen. She sincerely hoped that the old, sturdy furniture reflected the man.

Camden sat behind his desk, his big hands linked in front of him. He was a giant with an imposing presence, but he stood when they entered, greeted all three of them with a firm shake and genuine smile, before indicating for them to take a seat.

‘It’s such a pleasure to meet Holden’s daughter,’ he began. ‘He talks about you often.’

Skye smiled. ‘My father was actually the one who recommended you.’
