“That,” she says, “is a deeply concerning amount of information.”

“You said I do not know you.”

“That was not an invitation to unveil the dossier, Karlsson.”

“I do not have a dossier.”

“Exactly what a man with a dossier would say.” She holds my gaze for a moment, then inhales and lifts her chin. “But now I need to know more about you, too.”

“What? Why?”

“We’re not going into our own marriage this underprepared. What if they ask questions?”

“They will ask whether we consent.”

“You don’t know that. Maybe there’s trivia.”

“There is not trivia.”

“You’re very confident for a man who’s never been married before. Quick.” She points at me. “Favorite color.”

I sigh. “Green.”

“Hm. Shoulda known.”

“What does that mean?”

“You look like you were assembled in a forest. Mine is pink.”

“I know.”

“Stop knowing things before I tell you. Favorite food?”

“Steak.”

“Boringggg.”

“It is not boring if it’s cooked properly.”

She gives me a look. “Okay, what’s your favorite flavor, then?”

“Hm.” I think about it. “Cardamom.”

Her face lights with immediate approval. “See? Much better. Mine is pistachio.”

“Pistachio what?”

“Pistachio. The flavor.”

“In ice cream?”

“In anything. Favorite flower?”

“Blåklint.”

Her forehead creases. “Bless you.”

“It’s a cornflower.”
