A scholar could spend a lifetime on that sentence. A priest could build a sermon around it or burn it. A tyrant could twist it. A child might understand it better than all of us.
I want to share it.
The urge is so strong my hand moves toward the release control before I stop myself.
Not yet.
The words hurt.
Not never.
Not hidden forever.
Not buried so deeply fear becomes the architect.
But not tonight, alone, because I am tired and frightened and aching for reassurance from a galaxy that does not owe me easy absolution. The final fragments deserve witnesses. Safeguards. Sira’s language. Ghar’s steady skepticism. Brakk’s suspicious practicality. A board that annoys me enough to keep me honest.
The faint echo dims.
“You close door.”
“Yes.”
“Fear?”
“Some.”
“Wisdom?”
I let out a slow breath. “I hope so.”
“Hope is uncertainty with warmth.”
I blink. “That is actually beautiful.”
“Unexpected.”
“You people really need to stop sounding surprised when beauty happens.”
The presence flickers, and I feel something like amusement pass through the containment room. Then the thread thins.
“Return,” it says.
“To what?”
“Warmth.”
The word lands gently enough to break my heart.
Ghar.
I shut down the fragment field. The shard lowers into its cradle. Security locks reengage one by one, each chime sharp and final in the cold room. The line VALUE EMERGED WITHOUT ASSIGNMENT vanishes from the air, but not from me.
When the last lock seals, I sit very still.
No catastrophe follows.
No moral certainty descends.
