Teren looks over. “Oh good or oh terrible?”
“Potentially both.”
“That’s your favorite category.”
“The embedded sequencing isn’t decorative.” I flick several overlays into place. “Look here. The symbols aren’t merely arranged recursively. They’re mathematically nested.”
Sira steps closer. “Fractal encoding.”
“Yes.” Excitement races through me so quickly I forget exhaustion for several glorious seconds. “This isn’t just language. It’s compression architecture.”
Teren blinks. “In common-person words?”
“The inscriptions are storing vastly larger conceptual structures inside tiny symbolic frameworks.”
Brakk pokes his head out from beneath the panel. “You saying the walls are cheating?”
“Yes.”
“Excellent. Hate that.”
I magnify another sequence. More hidden structures emerge beneath the visible grammar. The symbols feel less like writing and more like shadows cast by something much larger.
A cold thrill crawls up my spine.
“These aren’t derivative from known Precursor syntax,” I say quietly. “They’re ancestral to it.”
Silence settles across the tent.
Even I hear the shift in my own voice.
Because I still publicly reject Sira’s conclusion.
Privately, though?
Privately, something inside me has already started climbing toward the impossible.
Not belief. Never belief.
But possibility.
And possibility is far more dangerous.
The rest of the team eventually drifts toward exhausted sleep cycles. Teren practically falls asleep mid-sentence while trying to recalibrate one of the translation arrays. Brakk disappears muttering profanity about resonance couplings and “academic goblins touching things they shouldn’t.” Sira remains for another hour studying the inscriptions in complete silence before finally inclining her head toward me.
“You should rest.”
“I’ll rest after I finish this layer comparison.”
“You said that three hours ago.”
“I meant it aspirationally.”
Her eyes soften slightly. “You are afraid of stopping.”
The words land harder than I expect.
I busy myself with the projection controls. “I’m afraid of losing momentum.”
