She sighed. “Yeah, even I don’t know what I was trying to say. But Ammo Grayson, you need to rein yourself in.”
Rein himself in? Once more, he had to hide his smirk. He wasn’t a guy that usually smiled much, but around her, it could be hard not to smile.
“I need to go to work.”
“You need to rest, and Kirsten told me to tell you not to come in until you’re feeling better.”
“You are . . . so . . . frustrating!”
She stomped away and he heard the door slam.
So naughty.
Rest?
She didn’t need to rest. She’d only just woken up.
Only problem was that she was stuck in her bedroom and she didn’t want to go back out because she’d probably just end up stomping her foot again.
That had been ridiculous.
With a sigh, she sat on the side of the bed. What was she going to do? It wasn’t a good idea to go to work today, and she knew it. Plus, she had no way to get there. And even if she did manage it, Kirsten would likely just drive her home.
But she also didn’t need that grouchy, bossy, sexy, gorgeous Neanderthal telling her what to do. She’d looked after herself for this long already.
Right, and a great job you did of that.
Plus, he’s only trying to help.
Yeah, but he didn’t have to be quite so bossy about it, did he?
Still, she definitely owed him, and she was a bit embarrassed by her foot stomping earlier and the way she’d kept arguing. Her grandmother always taught her that she should try and make a man’s life easier, not harder, that arguing wasn’t ladylike.
Of course, some of Grandma’s advice had also helped her get into this mess with Charlie.
With a sigh, she drew Kevin out of her hair and placed him on the bed. Then she lay back and stared up at the ceiling.
A knock on her door made her glance over and tense. Would he walk in?
Did she want him to walk in?
God, she was a mess, wasn’t she?
“Leaving some breakfast outside your door. Make sure you eat it,” Ammo ordered. “I’m going back out into the yard for a bit. Doctor’s appointment is at two this afternoon.”
Jeez, he moved fast, didn’t he? She glanced over at Kevin, who sat on the bedspread. Forcing herself up, she opened the door and grabbed the tray of food, bringing it inside and placing it on the bedside table.
She didn’t really want to eat. Her stomach was a riot of nerves and anxiety. However, she also didn’t want to pass out again, so she forced herself to eat some of the toast and eggs that he’d made her.
He took pretty good care of her, making sure that she ate and slept. He drove her around everywhere. Even to the crazier things, like feeding the cats at night.
Sure, he’d kind of disappeared for a while, but it wasn’t like he was really obliged to look after her, was he?
No one was holding him to that promise that he’d made to Charlie, except for his own morals.
He’d backed her at every moment from getting rid of Yvonne to her crazy number of male suitors to Ed delivering that over-inflated bill.
Fucking Ed. How dare he add extra things onto the funeral bill? He was just trying to take advantage of her.
