“Oh, I’ll be gloating,” Zander said. “We saw your truck out in the parking lot. Looks like you scratched it up good.”
“It wasn’t me,” he said.
Honey patted his arm. “There’s no shame in not having very good parking skills. If you crashed into something just admit it.”
“I can give you lessons when we get back home,” Zander told him.
“I don’t need parking lessons,” he grumbled.
“Uh-huh. Sure,” Zander said before he walked over to Keira, taking a seat next to her and wrapping his arm around her shoulders. She leaned into him, and Ammo felt a strange pang. What the hell was that? There was a weird feeling in his chest. It almost felt like desire or regret.
How could it feel like both of those things when they were so different?
Did he want what Zander and Keira had?
He couldn’t possibly, right? That wasn’t the life for him. He was happy with the way things were. He was happy with being alone, with not having any ties. The last thing he needed was a relationship. That would require a level of emotion that he wasn’t sure he had.
Just look at the way he’d reacted to Aimee crying. No, he definitely couldn’t be part of a relationship.
He was just in a weird mood. It was probably due to the guilt he was feeling over having nearly kissed Aimee.
She’d felt so good pressed up against him, so small and soft, and then she’d wriggled around underneath him, brushing against his cock.
It had felt like fucking heaven, and he’d wanted nothing more than to take her on that kitchen floor.
Thank God he’d come to his senses and left. He’d stayed away from her yesterday, his guilt riding him too hard.
But now he was feeling terrible for another reason. She’d been on her own all of yesterday. The yard wasn’t finished. She’d probably had more to do to prepare for Charlie’s funeral, and he’d abandoned her.
“Come on, are we going to go take a seat?” Honey said.
Webb moved up behind her, staring around at everyone. “I got propositioned three times on the way here from the bathroom. What’s with the women in this town?”
“Yeah, they’re not shy.”
“One of them even grabbed my ass,” he exclaimed.
“What? Who?” Honey’s face grew fierce. “Where is the bitch?”
“Calm down,” Webb told her. “I can protect my own virtue.”
She grumbled under her breath and stomped off to sit next to Zander.
“I don’t know what is going with her,” Webb said.
He didn’t? Jesus. Maybe he needed a slap up the head.
“Don’t tell me Eli and Miles came as well,” Ammo said.
“No, we left them holding down the fort,” he said. “Oh, Eli gave me some mail for you. I brought it in with me so that I didn’t forget it.”
He handed Ammo a white envelope with a printed address on the front.
Ammo shoved it in the front pocket of his pants.
“You coming with us?” Webb asked.
He glanced around one final time, and then he realized what he was doing. He was searching for her.
