To her surprise, Danny turned and then pointed to Ammo. Why was he pointing out Ammo to the sheriff? What was going on? Alarm filled her as the sheriff started walking toward Ammo.

What did he want with him?

She had a very bad feeling about this. She hurried over to where the sheriff and Ammo now stood just in time to hear the sheriff speak.

“Mr. Grayson, you’re under arrest for assault.”

37

That bitch.

Ammo sat fuming in a police cell.

He hadn’t seen this coming. A fake accusation of assault? Being in a jail cell didn’t worry him. Being away from Aimee did.

What if she needed him? What if she was still working at the bar and somebody tried to touch her or grab her? He didn’t have any faith in Danny, which is why he’d been there watching over her.

He fucking hated that she’d gone back to working there. But like she’d told him, he didn’t actually have a right to tell her what to do.

Maybe it was time to change that.

I want you.

Now, he had to just sit here and hope that she was all right, all because of some jacked-up assault charge.

What the fuck was even happening here?

After being read his rights, he’d been escorted out to a police car by the sheriff, who seemed far too happy about arresting him.

Aimee had tried to follow them out, to stop the sheriff from taking him, but that had only made things worse. The sheriff had dug in his heels, telling her to stay away or she was going to get arrested as well. Ammo couldn’t have that happen, so he’d gotten a little harsh with her. He felt bad about that too.

But he’d needed her to step away to keep herself safe.

He might also need her to call Zander. The cops sure hadn’t given him a phone call.

The door to his cell opened, and he glanced over as the sheriff stepped in, chewing on something.

“I want my phone call. I’ve been processed. I’m just sitting here in a cell. You need to give me my phone call within a reasonable timeframe.”

“You’ll be allowed a phone call. In the morning. Too late to make a call to a lawyer now.”

Fuck.

“Fine. I’ll be expecting that phone call first thing in the morning. You should know that this is all bullshit. And you’re going to find yourself in a whole lot of pain by the time this is done.”

“Are you threatening me, boy?”

Jesus, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d been called a boy. That was just laughable, considering he was bigger than the sheriff. But he guessed the sheriff felt he had to say things like that to make himself feel like the big man in the situation.

“Not a threat. It’s a promise.”

“You’re already in enough trouble, pushing a woman around like that. You don’t want to make any threats and make things worse for yourself.” The sheriff spat the wad of tobacco in his mouth onto the floor.

Lovely.

“I’ll expect that call first thing in the morning,” he said again.

“We’ll see how we get along,” the sheriff told him as he backed out the door.
