It was a threat, and I knew that he meant every single word he just said. He would have no problem making a person like me disappear, and that notion scared me. Bianca and Joel relied on me for a whole, and I wasn’t going to leave them alone. Lucas Cruz was a dangerous man, a fact I knew quite well enough, and I was in the same room with this dangerous man.

“What do you want?” I asked in a low tone.

“Good, now we are on the same foot,” he said as he stooped down to my eye level. “My doctor told me you have a few bruises; those morons from yesterday had banged you up. The sprain on your ankle should take a week or two to heal, which means you get to be here for the next few days.”

“That’s not possible!” I told him. “I have a life to live. God! I have a client I need to attend to.”

God! How can I forget that?

I needed to rush to the courtroom. My case files! I didn’t have them with me as I had left them in the car when I wanted to sneak into the warehouse. Today’s case was quite an important one, and I couldn’t afford to miss it.

“This is stupid. A very stupid thing,” I kept muttering.

“Will you stop muttering? I don’t know what you are worried about, but that’s not what’s important,” Lucas told me.

“My client is waiting for me,” I yelled at him.

“Not anymore. I had someone go in your place, and he won the case for you. You can thank me later.”

There was no way of knowing if he was telling the truth, but Lucas had no reason to lie. To be honest, he didn’t have a reason to keep me alive, and the fact that I was alive and well meant that he had something up his sleeve.

“I don’t believe you,” I told him as a matter of fact.

“And I really don’t care what you believe. What matters to me is that you give me what I want.”

Reasoning with him wasn’t an option, and the only way to be as far as possible from him was to give him whatever he wanted, which I honestly didn’t have any idea what it was.

“What do you want?” I finally asked.

“Good. Answers. Who sent you to the warehouse?” He asked.

“What?”

“The warehouse. Whoever rented that warehouse and stole my cars sent you to keep a watch on the place, but I don’t understand why they would send a lawyer,” he muttered.

He was tapping the bridge of his nose with each word. His statements were confusing me a bit, but it seemed he had this perception that I was working for one of his enemies, which was a rather stupid conclusion, seeing how I wanted the end of the Lucas cartel and all gangs in the city.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Don’t talk to me in that tone. You know names, I need those names. I’ll give you an hour to think about it. Give me the names I want, and you can get out of here.”

I wanted to tell him he was being ridiculous, but Lucas was already walking out of the room. Chasing him wasn’t even an option, not with my sprained ankle. I had finally landed myself in trouble, and I needed to get out of it as soon as possible.

Think, Elena. There has to be some sort of explanation for this.

He had mentioned something about me spying for his enemy. Somehow, he had come to the conclusion that I knew about his stolen cars because I was working with the person who had stolen them.

“But Marcus LaRosa stole them. He and Diana were there yesterday,” I muttered to myself.

Both of them had been shocked to see me, and Diana had mentioned something about this being a setup. She mentioned how Marcus was a fool for trusting an enemy.

Why would she say that?

Diana’s statement and Lucas’s questions made it look like there was another third party in this whole operation. That third party, whoever they were, must be who Lucas was referring to as his enemy, and he thought I was working for them.

Returning back to my office was of utmost priority, and speaking to my client. I didn’t believe Lucas’s claim that he had attended to it. I am not a fool. Standing on my right foot was as painful as hell, and getting around for the next few days would be quite a problem. That was what I got for climbing those crates, a move I shouldn’t have even considered in the first place. Limping toward the door, I tried to open it, and I was surprised to find the door open.

There were no guards at the door, and I quietly slipped through, closing the door without so much as a sound. This was my opportunity to slip out, and I wasn’t going to fuck it up this time. My sprained ankle did not help so much in my escape, but I managed to leave the hallway and step into a rather exotic living room.
