When I don’t respond, he bites my lip, nipping hard enough to draw blood. I want to moan. Still, I don’t so much as whimper.
“You’re gonna have to try harder than that to sell this,” he whispers, clenching the back of my knees as the footsteps grow louder. “Kiss me like you mean it, dammit.”
There’s a hungry note to his voice that makes my breath hitch, and before I realize what I’m doing, my lips start moving. He falters like he was expecting me to push him away, and when I don’t, he releases a low groan that sends a chill rippling up my spine.
That first kiss was nothing. A fragment of a kiss. A kiss-ette.
But this—
This.
Lawton takes full advantage of my parted lips and sucks my tongue into his mouth, turning our kiss from robotic to raw. My fingers scrape down the back of his jacket, hard enough to leave scratch marks on the leather. I arch into him until our bodies are flush, hips sinking against each other. His lips are demanding, everything I’d expect from him, but they’re also unexpectedly soft. It’s a kiss full of tongue and teeth-knocking and flutters.
A spark of heat drops to my core, scorching there. We’re both a little crazed now. His fingers find their way into my hair, scraping against my head. I’ve never kissed a man who knows my real name, and it’s more thrilling than I thought. My nipples tighten, and he must feel it because his moan slips into my mouth. He deepens the kiss, rolling his hips against me like he’s fucking me.
I can feel the hard length of him pressed against my thigh. I’m not surprised, but I am shocked when my legs tighten around his waist, drawing him closer, wanting more.
“Oh, shit,” Bobbi says.
Our heads jerk apart.
Right.
There were footsteps. The cover. I was so tangled up in Lawton that I didn’t notice another person walked into the office.
I unwrap my legs and push him away with a palm to his chest, keeping my touch gentle since we have an audience. His pupils are blown wide, and his breathing is ragged. If his lips look that swollen, I don’t want to know what I look like.
“I miss the honeymoon stage,” Bobbi sighs. “I’ll just…” She points over her shoulder.
“Don’t worry. It’s fine,” I pant, smoothing my dress to avoid Lawton’s blistering gaze. “We just got carried away in here.”
I try to put distance between us, but he drags me against his side and places a hand on the curve of my waist, brushing his thumb over my hip. “It’s my fault. I have a hard time keeping my hands off my wife.”
Bobbi’s eyes drift over our rumpled clothes, then move to the scattered papers, then finally, the safe. I follow her gaze, and my throat goes dry.
The safe…
It’s open.
22Sabrina
Firearms.
And these aren’t just shotguns for dove hunting—although there are plenty of those. There are some fully automatics too. Military-grade weapons are heavily regulated. They’re almost impossible for civilians to obtain, and they have an entire safe full of them.
Bobbi’s smile doesn’t budge, but it almost seems to petrify as she rushes past us. “I love my man, but he never remembers to lock the safe. Good thing it’s just us here, right?”
I can’t think up a response, because I’m still trying to catch my breath from that kiss.
“That doesn’t seem smart,” Lawton says, chest still heaving. “What’re y’all keeping all those for?”
She twists the handle and winces. “Arch would absolutely kill me for saying this, but he’s a little bit of a doomsday guy. Don’t hate him, but he’s convinced NASA already knows an asteroid’s coming that’ll wipe us all out. And don’t get him started on global warming. He thinks humans are ruining the planet. That’s why we went solar. He just wants to be prepared for whatever happens.”
A crunchy, fixed-gear-riding, doomsday conspiracy theorist with a closet of military rifles? That I can work with.
“And he needs a safe full of these because…” I trail off.
Bobbi resets the password. “He also grew up bird hunting as a kid before he became pescatarian. I told him wings and fins are basically the same, but now he only eats things with fins. Anyway, I feel super awkward about interrupting, so I’ll just leave you two alone for a little,” she adds before disappearing down the hall.
