A pulse of light moved through the nearest current below them and then the starway roared to life. The thunderous sound echoed through the cavern, and Lora covered her ears until it became a strange, wavering hum. The archway's darkness gave way to swirling light, a galaxy of silver and blue churning within its frame.

“Well, time to go!” said Korvel, stepping through without hesitation before the swirling light swallowed him.

"Um… should we wait to see if he comes back screaming before we follow, or…?" Lora was already taking a cautious step away from the gateway.

Vaelor—without responding—stepped through after him.

Lora blinked. "Alright. I mean… or we could send two to check."

Alyra reached for her hand and brought it to her lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. "Come on."

"But I like my plan better," Lora pouted.

The pair went through together, Lora somewhat reluctantly. One by one, the remaining survivors followed, stepping into the light and vanishing.

Elowynn stayed beside Caelyn.

Below them, the currents continued flowing through the darkness. Somewhere beyond sight, deep beneath the containment ring and the foundations of the world, another pulse rolled through the network. She felt it beneath her feet. Felt it in the stone. Felt it in the terrible certainty growing inside her that whatever was happening beneath Aetheris had only begun.

Then she looked at Caelyn. At his black eyes and veins.

He was already watching her.

Not the starway. Not the currents.

Her.

Despite it all, he smiled at her. Soft and genuine. He waved a hand toward the gate.

“After you."

The exchange was so achingly ordinary that Elowynn wanted to sink into it.

Elowynn smirked at him, then she took his hand.

“No. Together.”

His smile widened and he leaned forward, pressing his lips tenderly to her own. Elowynn savored it, wanting nothing more than to continue where they had left off. That heated moment in her chambers had felt like spans ago, but she knew it had only been about half a sun.

The aethercurrents released another thunderous groan beneath them.

Reality returned all at once.

Reluctantly, she stepped back. There would be time to explore whatever this had become between them later. They simply had to survive long enough to reach it.

“Let’s go,” he said, tugging her gently toward the gate.

Silver light swallowed them as they both stepped through. She didn't know where it would take them. She didn't care as long as it was away from here.

For an instant, Elowynn felt nothing at all, as if suspended in time and space. But that feeling of nothing didn't last long

Cold, damp air caressed her face.

The scent of salt filtering down tunnels filled her lungs.

She was nearly brought to tears.

The starway chamber beneath Lumenshire Abbey stood exactly as she remembered.
