My stomach chose that exact moment to remind me I hadn’t eaten all day. Slowly, I turned to look at Riot.
He was leaning against the bar exactly as before. “What?” he asked, sounding far too innocent. Then he lifted one shoulder in a lazy shrug. “Knew you’d forget to eat.”
Emotions welled up inside me, my nose stung, and my eyes got blurry. It wasn’t really about the food. It was the thought he had put into it. Knowing he’d planned for it, that he’d taken care of me without ever making a fuss about it.
I looked away before he could see the emotion creeping onto my face and found myself wishing the night wouldn’t end, the clubhouse would stay loud and warm forever.
That the strange life I’d stumbled into would remain exactly as it was. I smiled before I could stop myself and dragged Riot with me to eat.

RIOT
I was late, not by much, about five minutes maybe. The second I pushed through the church doors, I knew Shadow wasn’t happy. He was already sitting at the head of the table, arms folded across his chest while the rest of the brothers settled into their seats.
They’d been waiting on me.
“Sorry, Pres.” The apology came automatically.
Shadow held my gaze for a second before giving a single nod.
I dropped into my chair and reached for the coffee sitting in front of me. It was cold, but I didn’t want to piss Shadow off any more by not drinking it.
Ghost smirked. “Nice of you to join us.”
“Fuck off.”
His grin widened, but any reply was cut off by a sharp look from Shadow.
Shadow leaned back in his chair. “Now that everyone’s here . . .” The look he sent me made it very clear who that comment was aimed at.
Spider moved forward and dropped several photographs onto the table.
I picked up the nearest photograph, and my stomach dropped when I saw it was of the clinic, several figures dotted around. For a few moments, I just stared at it. The coffee suddenly tasted like ash.
“What am I looking at?”
Spider’s eyes flicked toward me. “Kings been watching the clinic.” He stepped to my side and pointed at the people in the photograph who we knew to be Kings.
I looked down at the photograph again, then at the next one. Same location, but on a different day and from different angles. The uneasy feeling in my gut started spreading. “What were they doing there?”
Spider shrugged. “Waiting.”
Something cold slid down my spine. “Waiting for what?” I already knew the answer but refused to let it surface.
Shadow’s expression darkened and Spider rubbed a hand across his jaw. “Not what.” His gaze settled on me. “Who.”
The room seemed to get very quiet. I already knew the answer. Part of me knew before he even opened his mouth.
“The nurse.”
The chair legs scraped sharply against the concrete floor as I stood, the chair tumbling to the ground.
Every eye in the room landed on me.
“What do they know?”
“We don’t know,” Spider admitted, placing two more photographs in front of me, both showing the front entrance of my apartment.
