A scrawny arm grips the doorframe, blocking the path. “She’s not going anywhere with you.” His eyes flick up and down my frame like I’m shit on the sole of his shoe.
They know I know Lacey now, they won’t do anything. She’s their golden ticket to supplying drugs to Blackcastle. If only they knew they were actually losing out on money because of her.
I slowly turn my head towards him. “I wasn’t asking.” I’m already trying to keep my temper in check, and he’s not helping. My palm cuts into his elbow with a smack, making it bend to clear the exit. All of this is risky and I know it.
“It’s fine, D,” Lacey placates before brushing past him. He smacks a hand on her ass and she giggles drunkenly.
“We’re just in there if you need us, Lace,” Dickhead calls as we walk to the top of the stairs.
When the door closes behind us, I grip her arm and spin her around, her eyes flashing with something close to fear which is new. It’s normally me trying to get away from her.
I wonder if Jordie’s eyes flashed with fear too.
Snatching the USB stick out of my jacket pocket, I hold it close to her face, hands trembling. “What is this?” Every second that goes by I struggle to keep my anger on the backburner.
Eyes widening, she attempts to take it, but I move it out of her reach. The last thing I need is her taking it to the very person who needed it. “Where did you get that?” Her words come out quickly.
“Where?” I bark a laugh. “You should’ve been paying attention instead of trying to seduce me into bed.”
She’s not the one with the upper hand here anymore. I am.
“Kain, I nee—”
“Need it? I don’t fucking think so.” I point to the worn sofa behind us without breaking eye contact. “Sit.”
She visibly swallows before doing as I instruct, slowly backing towards the sofa and falling into it with a groan of old wood.
I lean against the windowsill. We stay in silence with the low rumble of music from below. Clearly they’re not that worried about her.
“I can wait,” I muse. I can’t. I need to get back to Jordie.
“I don’t know what you want me to say.”
She can’t be serious. “Where the fuck did you get these files from?”
“I don’t know what’s on that stick, Kain. I was just told to deliver it—”
“Bullshit,” I bark.
She flinches, wrapping her arms around herself and leaning back into the sofa.
I spent years refusing to think about what she’s done to me. Thinking how it never changed anything, how she would always get her way no matter how many times I offered something different. She knew I was weak to drugs, and she used that against me.
Now she’s afraid of me.
“Did you take the pictures?”
She’s quiet for a second too long. Her reactions tell me everything I need to know.
“No.”
“Did you steal the polaroid out of my wallet?”
Hesitation. “No.”
“The video?”
She doesn’t answer. Her hand tightens on the arm of the sofa, and my own are grasping at the last bits of restraints.
