This is it. This is the proof I’ve needed

But I can’t show this to Jordie. I can’t.

This is fucked up.

She should know about it, but something like this…

Especially after what she told me last night… she didn’t need to say anything more for me to fill in the rest of the story. Those fuckers are revolting and this confirms it even further. Once I find out where this St Anton’s is, and who would dare to fucking touch her, I will burn them all alive.

She needs to see it.

I come to a folder of written documents and click on one.

‘A guide to cleansing a sinner through penetration’

A different one.

‘Preparing a female for fertilisation’

What the fuck? This is perverted.

My finger stops on a video, the only video amongst hundreds of pictures, it’s a blurred thumbnail of pink and black. Swallowing, I click on it and choking sounds fill the silence of my car. The video comes into focus and my heart sinks at Jordie with a pink dildo shoved into her mouth, while tears stream down her face and her hands are tied above her.

Red hot rage fills my veins.

The video jolts—whoever is holding the camera isn’t steady at all. It’s brutal violation. Is this what she went through at St Anton’s?

She’s looking at something someone is holding, her eyes are wholly focused on it, but she looks too weak to show any of what she’s feeling. And that’s when I notice it—red nails. The same nails that have raked down my back when I didn’t want them to. The ones that grappled with my clothes when I was too out of it to say no.

My heart pounds a dangerous beat in my ears, a fury building that I’m not sure I can keep leashed for much longer.

Lacey.

I feel sick.

I’m gonna be sick.

Opening my car just in time, I can’t stop the bile from projecting out of my throat.

After expunging what little I had in my stomach, I sit up and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand as I breath heavily. Finally, I slam the laptop shut, throw it onto the passenger seat and press my foot onto the accelerator, speeding to the one place I know for definite I can find Lacey, not caring about what might happen to me.

This is where the dealers set up camp. A small, abandoned neighbourhood sits outside of Blackcastle and was never part of the town so our laws don’t apply here; they can’t get caught by the church for being in possession of illegal goods. Brick crumbles from buildings and slabs of wood replace glass where windows used to be. Sinister looking symbols painted in dripping red onto the buildings.

I pull up to the house at the end of the street. It’s the biggest one of them all, overlooking the rest of the houses. There are no lights on, but I know they’re inside. They operate in the basement, just in case.

I’m not too proud about how I know this and regret stirs up inside me again. I’m about to come face to face with Lacey in a new light, but I can feel Jordie’s caring arms around me and her voice in my head and it calms me.

The stench of weed and alcohol mixed together aggravates my nostrils when I near the broken front door. I swing it open and it breaks off its last hinge with a clatter. I can’t tell if it’s smart or stupid. Smart, because it truly looks like no one is here. Stupid, because if they did ever get found out, it’s not hard to enter.

Faint music and group laughter carries from the only closed door as I descend the stairs. Chatter quietens when I push the door open, immediately searching for Lacey in the smoky haze and confused faces. My hand compresses the handle until it might snap. The potent smell of marijuana does nothing but make my limbs tremble with the need to smoke again.

Someone stands to my right, the barrel of a gun already pressing into my temple. “Who the fuck are you?”

This is the reason I’ve never stepped foot here. He could’ve just pressed the trigger.

“Kain.” There she is. Her voice matches the surprise on her face. She pushes her way through towards me while everyone watches her, bottles of beer in hand, and noses paused halfway to the tables.

“I need to talk to you,” I grind out.
