“Fuck,” I whisper, looking to Kain for a solution, but he doesn’t seem in the least fazed.

“Open the door!”

“What the fuck do we do?” I hiss.

Kain shrugs, his hand clutching at the door handle and I slap it away. “No fucking way. Get in my fucking bathroom.”

“Jordan!” The handle rattles.

Kain makes no attempt to move.

“Now, Kain,” I whisper-yell. Whatever he sees on my face must make him relent because he sighs and does as I ask.

“Jordan!”

“I’m coming,” I call.

After fixing my hair in a mirror at lightning-speed, I unlock the door to my mother and Heath with thunderous looks on their faces and flanked by several guards.

“Didn’t I tell you to keep your door open? I’ll rip it off its hinges the next time I catch it closed,” Mother states.

“What about my privacy?”

“You don’t get any.” Mother’s eyes bounce around my room, and I fucking pray Kain has stayed inside the bathroom.

“I’d like to see you downstairs in two minutes.” She looks me up and down. “In something more modest. We have an important guest.” Her heels clack on the worn wood on their way out, leaving no room for argument from me. Heath follows behind her like her personal circus monkey.

Hands snake around my waist, startling me.

I sigh a frustrated breath. “Get off me, Kain.”

“I fucking tried everything I could to find out where you were, why do you think I was still here when you returned? I had so many opportunities to leave, but I lived every day with the sheer hope you’d return.”

My chest squeezes painfully at his confession.

I brush past him towards my wardrobe, mindlessly pulling out an old, tailored, black dress that leaves nothing showing but my arms.

“What are you doing?” Kain asks, rounding the wardrobe door.

I don’t even know how to answer that question. My mind is swirling with the possibility he might be telling the truth I don’t notice I’m following Mothers orders. He is telling the truth. I know it—deep down.

“Jordie.”

After changing, with Kain trying to get my attention the entire time, I start heading for the door but pause by my chest of drawers to grab a pair of panties. Kain’s hand halts me and I lift my gaze to his heated one.

“No.” He chuckles. “I want you to feel your stepbrother’s sinful cum dripping down your thighs when you’re out there talking to them.”

I swallow the heated emotions stirring inside me and chew on the smirk threatening to break through.

“Find a way,” I state.

“What?” he asks as he purses his lips.

“Find a way to prove you didn’t do it.” Without another word, I head downstairs to the common room.

I don’t need him to prove it. I believe him. But it gets him out of my way while I get closer to exposing his family.

I near the cracked open door and hear a familiar voice, one I’m very accustomed to.
