That sound grates on my very being.

Muscles tensing, I slowly peer over Jordie’s shoulder to see Lacey’s mother hurrying towards us, gripping her mesh shawl to her chest as she rapidly tiptoes in her heels. Her ginger hair is pulled up into a neat updo as usual. I relax when I see that it’s just her and she doesn’t have Lacey in tow. But even though Lacey isn’t here, Jordie still visibly tenses.

“Mrs Spenser!” my father says in greeting. “Is it just you this year?”

She catches her breath as she reaches us. “Unfortunately. Lacey wasn’t feeling very well tonight. Which is a shame, it could’ve been a great opportunity to bring these two together.” She throws a smile in my direction, but I don’t care to return it. I look at Jordie instead, where her face now wears a subtle displeased look as she carefully regards Lacey’s mother.

“Well, I hope she’ll be attending tomorrow's service.” Father raises an eyebrow.

“Of course.” Mrs Spenser nods. “I wouldn’t let her miss it for anything.”

“I’m glad.” Father nods once, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “Her attendance at the church is just as important as Kain’s in regard to their union.”

Jordie’s eyes flick towards the floor, lashes pinching at the corners. I fight to keep my face schooled in neutrality.

“I understand,” Lacey’s mother confirms. “This month's funds should be arriving in the account by Monday…” Her voice trails off as we make our way to the long table at the dais.

I follow closely behind Jordie, fingers literally tingling with the need to touch her. She giggles quietly before pivoting to the right, taking her place at the black clothed table on the main floor, closest to ours.

The instrumental music dies down, and my father clears his throat as he stands. Every member of the clergy turns, awaiting his speech with rapt attention.

“Thank you everyone for attending another annual Blackcastle ball…”

Father’s voice trails off as I lock eyes with Jordan. She’s already peering at me, eyelashes fluttering as she leans forward in her chair, tilting her head and pressing her arms together at her sides, her breasts almost spilling out of the corset.

Blood rushes to my dick in an instant.

Fuck.

Look away, Kain.

I can’t. This little devil wants to play tonight, and she knows I won’t deny her.

I can hear her sighs of pleasure in my head as I fist my hands under the table, watching as she brings a finger up and grazes her bottom lip.

I need to look away from her.

Her teeth clamp around her finger and I can hear the intangible sound of her moan in my ears. I grip onto the material of my trousers and boxers, looking for any reprieve from the way my erection painfully presses against it.

Loud applause snaps me out of the heated moment and I wipe my sweaty palms on my trousers as Father sits down. The sounds of clinking cutlery, music, and low chatter fill the room once again.

“Eat up, sons. This is the start of something amazing.” Father cheers to us, then towards Jordie’s table, sounding pleased with himself.

Glancing over in Jordie’s direction, I notice she’s gone.

Much to Father’s and Dorrian’s displeasure, I don’t waste any time excusing myself from the table.

Present Day

The car rolls to a stop outside my childhood home. Or what I once would’ve considered my home. This was my house, but never my home. A building I resided in. If only it didn’t take me so long to see that.

“Mrs Westbrook requested I bring you here so you can collect your things, and I can take them home for you,” a suited guard says as the engine switches off. He came to retrieve me from the dorm I shared with my roommate, Poppy, for the last five years.

My mother’s new name almost makes me huff out a bitter laugh.
