“And I told you that you’re in my wing, which I own. And whatever I own, I can touch. That includes you, little devil.” I won’t tell her it’s because my skin is yearning for hers and that I need to touch her any chance I get.
My Jordie. My little devil. Mine.
“You’re fucking delusional,” she spits. “We’re not in your wing anymore and I never belonged to you.”
I can’t help the smile that grows whenever she fires back. She’s like this corrupt little demon who’s come to wreak havoc in my life, and I’ll gladly let her do it.
“Maybe not before.” I let out a deep chuckle. “But you do now. So, you either get in the passenger seat, or I put you in the boot.”
She lets out a disbelieving laugh. “Move out of my way, I’m going back inside.”
I pause for a moment, letting her consider the options I’ve given her, and when she doesn’t say anything more, I shrug. “Your choice.”
“Thank you.”
I swipe her up bridal style, causing her to promptly resume her fight, squealing. “Viper!”
“Why Viper?” I chuckle.
She growls, punching her fist into my chest as I fumble with the key fob to unlock the boot. “Because you’re a snake.”
Finding the small lever under the boots lip, I swing it open and gently place her rigid body inside, careful to make sure she doesn’t hurt herself on anything.
“Do not!”
“I gave you a choice.”
Her face twists in fury as she attempts to climb out, but her efforts go to waste as I begin closing the boot.
“Kain Westbrook, if you close this fucking boot I will hate you forever,” she warns, attempting to stick her foot in the tiny gap.
“You already do, Jordie. It makes no difference.” With that, I click it shut and round the car to the driver’s side.
She’s come back harder, stronger, vicious, hating me, but this is what she needs. It seems I’m her new fuel to her already lit fire, and that’s exactly what I’ll be if this will be what gets her through until we can escape this life together. I will burn bright enough for her to understand I didn’t ruin us. In the end, it’ll be both of us against the world, I’ll make sure of it. But until I can convince her to believe me, I have to lay my feelings to the side and match her inferno.
Let. Her. Hate. Me.
I’ll switch off my sensitivity to every hateful word she may spew. Which will be an easy task since some part deep inside me enjoys this side of her.
That gives me pause to my thoughts—what the hell is St Anton and what did they do to her?
I slip on a spare black T-shirt from the backseat before roaring the engine to life. It rumbles beneath me and sends currents of calm into me, accompanied by Jordie’s banging on the steel.
After a few minutes of driving and listening to Jordie calling me every name under the sun, I take a right and drive down a winding, forest path to the old warehouse we found years ago and decided to renovate. It serves as a haven for us, with Blake and Asher’s lives not looking too much prettier than ours now with their parents arguing all the time, they spend most days here. Though I don’t know much past that, neither of them like to talk about it.
The large, overgrown red brick building comes into view as I near, most of it hidden by the surrounding trees. Shattered windows are evenly spaced around the building, and a yellow glow emanates from inside.
Blake and Asher’s motorbikes are already parked on the small bit of concrete ground poking through the sparse grass. I pull in next to them then swiftly turn off the engine. Jordie’s banging becomes louder once it’s silent.
“Let. Me. Out,” she grunts between bangs.
I sigh, exit the car and head straight for the barely holding on metal door.
‘Caramel’ by Sleep Token echoes through the hollow space as Blake sweeps the floor from debris and Asher snaps an old desk in half, ready to be disposed of.
It’s a large building, with enough capacity for a few hundred people.
“How was church service?” Blake teases monotonously when he spots me, black hair flopping over his forehead as his head whips up.
