“Are you okay?” Kain croaks, throat sore from fruitless yelling.

No. “I’m okay. We need to get the fuck out of here, though,” I growl.

I attempt to move, but my hips click, sending a shooting pain through me. I yelp and my chains ding.

“Jordie?”

“I’m fine,” I attempt to reassure Kain, all the while knowing that I think a bone in my hips may be broken.

We can’t get out. There’s no chance.

This is the end.

Minutes pass. Hours, maybe. And no one attempts a word.

The door opens again, and this time, a man walks in, flooding the room in light. They’re hard to make out at first, but then I notice…

Dorrian.

I hiss through clenched teeth as I attempt to move again but I can’t.

He doesn’t speak, he just looks around before sighing.

“Dorrian? Is that you?” Kain asks.

Dorrian walks away, then returns with a few small bags, pushing them through the gaps in the gates. “You need to eat.”

Chains rattle like they just broke as Kain growls. He’s standing, attempting to move forward, but where his hands are also bound, he doesn’t get far. “What the fuck are you doing in here? GET US OUT!” he yells.

“Kain—” Dorrian starts but is swiftly interrupted by Kain.

“GET US OUT. GET JORDAN OUT!” The despair in his voice makes my throat tighten.

“I would if I could!” Dorrian snaps, growling and ratting Kain’s gate. Kain recoils as Dorrian shoves a water bottle through the bars and does the same for me.

“How do you expect me to drink that, asshole? You fucking prick. The audacity of you to fucking bring us food after getting us here in the first place. How did you find us?”

“I didn’t.” Dorrian’s voice is calmer than I’ve ever heard it, it’s like he’s trying to restrain some sort of emotion. Any sort of emotion when it comes to Dorrian.

“Then get us the fuck out of here!” Kain pulls on his chains.

This isn’t the first time Kain has begged Dorrian for help. And no matter that he knows Dorrian won’t, he never stops trying. Like something inside him still has hope for his brother.

“I can’t!” Dorrian’s restraint finally snaps and he yells. “I fucking—” His voice cracks. “I fucking tried everything to keep you safe!” The confession is like a razor cutting through paper.

“Bullshit!” Kain barks back.

Words have escaped me. And then I remember every time Cassie praised Dorrian—how good he was…

“You’ve made my life miserable since the day I was born!”

“Have I? Have you ever wondered why the guards weren’t patrolling your wing? Who do you think left Heath’s office open and made sure no one watched you get in? Jordie was never supposed to be in your wing when they brought her back. But I needed you together so you could protect each other." Dorrian scoffs. "The butler clearly favoured money more than his life." He paces back and forth before turning back to Kain. "The car I brought you for your birthday? That was supposed to be your fucking escape plan.

"The knife”—he looks at me—“I left that for you on purpose”—then back to Kain—“they wanted to kill you the minute you were born. I couldn’t let them. I couldn’t. Seeing your little face? Your fist wrapping around my finger like you already chose me to protect you? Watching Mum die? I knew something was wrong. What Mum said to me before she left…” He pauses, shaking his head, then drops it to his chest before he takes a deep breath and looks up again. “I told them to take me. But they didn’t. They used me for everything; I watched them skin people alive. I watched them rape people. I was five. I was fucking five! I was too young to understand anything, but I knew I loved you the same way Mum would’ve loved you. I sacrificed my childhood for yours because you were the only person I had left!” His voice cracks at the end.

You know when the air feels charged? Just before a thunderstorm? Yeah, this is what it feels like right now.

Dorrian blows out a long breath. “This is a cult, Kain. They’re going to sacrifice you. All of you. I’m trying to stop it. I have help on the way, so please, just hang in there,” Dorrian tells us, voice thick with emotion.
