“One other thing,” Swede said. “I got the contact information for the other survivor.”

“Who is she?” Danny asked, her pulse hammering hard against her eardrums.

“Melanie Ellis,” Swede said. “She was working at Fort Benning back then, arranging transportation for military personnel. I’ll have my female counterpart, Kayla Russell, contact her to see if she would be willing to speak to us.”

“I’d like that,” Danny said.

Jacques’s cell phone vibrated. “I have another call coming in. It’s Remy.”

“I’ll let you answer it,” Swede said. “Let me know how it goes.”

“Will do,” Jacques said.

Swede ended the call, and Jacques received the call from Remy, placing him on speakerphone before answering, “This is Jacques.”

“Had a call from Major Beaumont. I let it go to voicemail. I thought you and Danny might want to be tapped in when I return his call.”

“Absolutely,” Jacques said. “Are we doing it now?”

“Yes. You might want to put your phone on mute while I make this a three-way call.

“Doing it. Go ahead.” Jacques muted his cell phone and held it between himself and Danny.

A phone rang and was answered immediately. Beaumont jumped right in with, “Curtis Hale phoned me this afternoon. Said you were asking questions about accommodations I arranged back at Fort Benning four years ago. What exactly are you looking for?”

Remy answered calmly, “Your name came up in connection with those rooms. Are you willing to answer some questions?”

“Sure, but I’d rather do it in person. I have several events lined up here in the next few days. Any way you can make it to DC, say in the next couple of days?”

“I’d planned on coming out to check on our guys providing security for Colonel Jeffries. We can meet then.”

“That works,” Beaumont said. “We’ll talk then.”

Remy ended the call.

Jacques met Danny’s gaze. “I’m going with him.”

Danny nodded. “I’m going, too.”

Jacques’s phone rang again, and Remy’s name flashed across the screen.

As soon as he received the call, Jacques said, “We’re going with you.”

“I’ll have Swede make the flight and hotel arrangements,” Remy said.

“Make the flight for tomorrow morning,” Danny said. “My brother’s retirement ceremony is two days from now. I want to talk to him before his ceremony and before we meet with Beaumont. I never told him what happened. It’s time I did.”

“I’ll get Swede right on it,” Remy said. “Pack a bag and be ready. I’ll have him arrange for an early flight out of New Orleans.”

After the call ended, Danny shook her head. “Nothing for four years, and suddenly, everything’s happening at once.”

Jacques opened his arms.

Without hesitation, Danny fell into them. They stood for a long time, not saying a word, just holding each other.

“Do you need to go back to your apartment to get clothes for the trip?” Jacquez asked, his breath stirring the hair at her temple.

“I don’t want to move from this spot quite yet,” she said.
