He nods, but I can tell he ain’t done yapping yet.
“Anything else?” I ask.
“Where is your wife? It’s been very quiet around here. I heard you took her home from the bar.”
I drag my teeth across my bottom lip. “It’s a marriage on paper. A deal, Jett. I don’t care what she’s doing.”
I say the words out loud, and it sits wrong in my gut. I do fuckin’ care. When I think about her watching me beat that guy up, with a hunger in her eyes I’ve never seen before, I have to fight myself not to go to her.
Jett frowns. I know it’s not worth pressing, but I do enjoy his thought processes.
“What?” I ask.
“Okay, this is a hot take.”
“A fucking what?”
“Hot take? Do you ever use the internet, grandpa?” He looks me in the eye but fidgets with his Stetson.
I suck in a breath, trying to calm the rage only Jett Lawson can bring out in me. “Right. What is your hot take? And this is the last time you ever use that term in a sentence.”
He laughs, ignoring that.
“That you and Gianna are a perfect couple. She’s exactly what you need. Powerful. Hot. Sassy. Just imagine you two in combat together, ruling an empire.”
Something tightens in my chest, causing me to clear my throat to make sure I’m not having a heart attack. “I beg to differ. We’re opposites in every way. Her family tried to kill Ace and Harper. I can’t trust her. And I think she would slit my throat in my sleep if I pissed her off.”
Jett grins. “But ain’t that what makes life exciting? She’d eat Ace alive. But you? You’re a good match. And that kiss at the altar? Fuck me.”
“I’m going to need you to shut the fuck up now, Jett.”
He jumps down from the fence, adjusting his hat, before asking, “Have you had sex with her yet?”
“Fuck off,” I scoff.
I can hear his laugh echoing as he heads back towards Hunter’s house. Until this marriage is over, I’m not going to hear the end of this.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Gianna
“Aren’t you going to say hello to your husband?” Dom asks as we walk past the fenced-off area. Colt is inside on a monster-sized horse, doing some kind of skidding thing. I’ve been watching him for a few minutes from a distance.
He is hot as hell doing it. His biceps tensed. That man is built out of pure muscle, which I can appreciate. Shame the muscles are attached to a complete dick.
“No. I’d rather not,” I mutter.
Dom grumbles something beside me. I’ve decided to embrace some of the outfits Harper bought for me. I’m sporting a pair of cut-off denim shorts and a frilled, low-cut top with an open back. Although I opted for my own boots instead of the country ones.
“We’ve been stuck inside for days, G. We need to make friends.”
I roll my eyes, crossing my arms. “Since when? And we went to that diner yesterday? And I bought an apartment block right on the beach back in LA yesterday. It’s been productive.”
“Yeah. And yet, none of it has got us any closer to going back home.”
I tap his arm. “It’s going to take time. You know that. And we’ve already been invited into a meeting with Hunter; that’s a good sign.”
We carry on walking, and I try not to glance too many times at Colt. I don’t want to make eye contact.
