“I said I’m going to protect the people you’ve helped dose with drugs, Cheryl. Keep up.”

Cheryl looked dumbfounded. That was Garrett’s cue to leave the video room, taking the tablet with him.

“We’re five minutes out from George’s place,” Taylor—no, not Taylor, Babs—said. Garrett winced at his previous error. Hopefully his last. “Misty and I are approaching from the north in one car while Danvers and Robin are coming from the south.”

“There aren’t any accessible rooftops for me to watch from, so I’m going in with Danvers. Damn suburbs,” Robin added. Accessible rooftops for his sniper rifle, he meant. Garrett really hoped it wouldn’t come to that. He’d rather George live so they could question him.

“Arriving at George’s location,” Babs said, and all the joking came to an end. “Parking a block away and approaching on foot.”

Car doors opened and closed in Garrett’s ears, but he didn’t hear any footsteps. The team moved in quietly. Meanwhile, he walked down the hall toward the bullpen and McHugh’s office.

“Subject is in an apartment building, third floor, on the north end,” Babs continued.

Rafe had given him a heads up about the hierarchy in BFS and how missions unfolded. Garrett was shocked when Rafe told him Babs was better at leading a team while in the field. He wouldn’t have thought Rafe would be willing to admit that, but Rafe told him that’s not how they did it in BFS. They were a team who respected everyone’s skills, and they weren’t afraid to admit when they weren’t the best person for a job. That surprised Garrett thanks to the egos that typically surrounded him.

“Misty and I are going in the back entrance while Danvers and Robin take the front,” Babs said.

“Makes sense. Misty likes it in the back,” Miguel said.

“And you better watch your back,” Rafe snapped, ire in his voice. No one got on Rafe’s nerves like Miguel. In fact, the biggest shock of all of this, besides Rafe being alive, was that Rafe and Miguel were actually able to work together. Well, maybe not pleasantly.

“Arriving at front entrance,” Thea said. A moment later a metallic clack hit Garrett’s ear. “Scan successful, entering building and approaching south end stairwell.”

“Works every time, baby!” Carson said.

Garrett was still getting used to this new version of Carson. He was blown away by his skills, though. Earlier, Carson told him about the phone software he created that could crack most electronic locks. It perfectly mimicked the fob renters had to scan to get in the building.

“Scan successful at back entrance, entering and approaching north stairwell,” Babs said.

Garrett listened as they ascended the stairs, their breathing the only noise besides their whispered voices.

“Arriving at third floor now,” Thea, or Danvers, said. “Hallway is clear.”

Thea’s voice made Garrett take a split second to think about Cole. He still couldn’t believe he knew more about his sister’s whereabouts than Cole did. He hoped Thea would let him be there for their reunion so he could see Cole’s reaction. In fact, he had a pretty good idea to help her out with it, but he’d have to think more about that later.

“Misty and I have reached the third floor. Approaching front door,” Babs said, his voice low.

All joking stopped and everyone remained quiet.

Garrett arrived outside McHugh’s office, entering without knocking. Cheryl spun to face him.

“Cheryl Thompson, you’re under arrest,” Garrett said, holding up his handcuffs, appreciating the shock in Cheryl’s face. “Oh shit, mic drop!” McHugh shouted, loud enough for the entire police department to hear.

Her gaze bounced between Garrett and McHugh. She whispered, “What the fuck?”

Garrett split his focus between McHugh’s office and the feed in his ear.

Rafe, Taylor and Thea were now only communicating using hand signals. When they arrived at the right door, they checked it for cameras and any explosives or booby traps that could be triggered by opening it.

BOOM.

After breaking down the door, shouts and commands followed, chaos ringing in

Garrett’s ears.

“Kitchen, clear.”

“Bedroom, clear.”
