Silas turned back, a dark brow arched. “No?”
“Sorry. That was dramatic. No. It’s still the middle of the day. The sun’s out.”
He nodded at that. Then he turned and jogged upward.
“What are you doing?” I ran up behind him. I was just two steps behind when he stepped right into a shaft of sunlight. “Silas!” I yelped.
But he didn’t start to smoke or sizzle, let alone burst into flame.
Silas’s smile was slow and lazy.
Stripped of his usual formal attire, there was something a lot more approachable about him. Something more, well, human. As he stood there, I felt like I was seeing the man he’d been when he’d been turned.
He was more relaxed, softer, maybe even a little cocky.
It was hot.
My poor body didn’t need to be any more attracted to him.
“There is special film you can get for the windows,” he explained. “They let in enough light to keep the plants alive but prevent me from incinerating.”
“Oh, right. Okay. Why do you sleep downstairs then?”
“I like the dark for sleeping.”
He rolled his head to one side, then the other. Then he reached over his head to stretch. Those pants? They slid down just the tiniest bit more.
I wasn’t sure if the little whimper that bubbled up inside me burst out or not.
“Coffee?” he asked.
The last thing I needed was to feel even more buzzed.
“Sure.”
At least he would keep his back to me while he made it, so I could try to pull myself together.
I sat down on the stool on the other side of the island, opening the folder and focusing on rearranging those fallen pages into their rightful places as the scent of espresso filled the space.
A mug clicked down near my hand, making me jump.
“Are you alright?” Silas asked. His brows pinched as he looked at me. “You’re flushed.”
Of course I was flushed. My entire body felt like a furnace. The flames were licking at every nerve ending.
“Fine.”
“If you insist. So what is this?” he asked.
CHAPTER TWENTY
[ “IF THEY FEEL familiar but you’ve never met them before, it’s either fate… or a very patient curse.”
— Ghosted & Confused - Episode 39]
Silas
Going from dreaming of her to finding her standing in my bedroom had been unexpectedly disorienting.
