The next, the umbrella fell, water cascaded down on my head, his arm slung around me, I was spun, tires squealed, and I was slammed back against the wall of the studio.

“What…”

I saw the taillights of the car as it slid off the sidewalk and back onto the road before peeling away.

“Are you okay?” Silas asked as I stood there, too stunned to answer, to react, to think clearly.

Had he just… saved me from getting run over?

“Maggie.” Silas’s voice took on a sharp edge.

Then his hands were on my face, forcing it back toward him.

“Are you hurt?”

“I… did you just… save me?”

“The car was coming too fast, swerved to avoid a pothole, and lost control.”

“You saved me from getting hit by a car.”

That… that was so romance novel-coded it was almost ridiculous. A strange, tight, almost hysterical little laugh escaped me.

His brows scrunched.

“Did you hit your head?” His hands were all over me then, sliding over my neck, up the back of my head, trying to find the injury that would explain a laugh at such an inappropriate time.

Finding nothing, he still didn’t let me go. His hands drifted down the sides of my face, framing my jaw. All the while, his gaze held mine captive.

His thumb moved out, just a feather-light brush across my cheek, then teasing the edge of my lips.

I short-circuited.

And instead of leaning into the touch and waiting for him to seal his lips to mine, or reaching out to grab the back of his neck and pull him in, what did I do?

I opened my big, stupid mouth.

“This is where the hero would kiss the heroine.”

Yep.

Yeah.

That’s what I said.

To the vampire who loathed romance (and romantic novels) with every fiber of his being.

I watched his gaze flicker, then harden.

His hands fell from my face.

“This is not a silly romance.”

With that, he turned away.

No.

No, it really wasn’t, was it?
