“You’ve trained your whole life for this.”

“I know.”

“No hesitation.”

“Obviously.”

“No mistakes.”

I glare. He knows better. I don’t make mistakes, and I sure as shit don’t fucking fail.

He continues speaking. “If Walker Creed leaves Yerrington alive, he’ll report everything he sees back to the Sons of Sin.”

“And if he dies?” I need to be sure this is what is best for the club.

“The trail ends here.”

Simple. Efficient. Clean. Exactly how he likes it.

I close the file. “When do I leave?”

“This afternoon.”

I stand. “So that’s it?”

“What more is there?” He frowns like I might be speaking a foreign language, like he doesn’t understand the damn question.

“Good luck?”

“No.”

“Don’t get stabbed?”

“No.”

“I’m proud of you?”

For the first time, something that could be akin to emotion flickers across his face, but it’s gone before I can properly name it.

“You know what pride earns.” I nod once. “Complacency, and complacency gets people killed.”

I tuck the file under my arm, and he returns to his paperwork without a glance in my direction, as if I’ve never been here at all. Dismissed.

As I reach the door, his voice stops me. “Poppy.” I glance over my shoulder. “When you pull the trigger...” His expression is carved from stone. “...remember you’re not killing a man. You’re killing the future of the Sons of Sin.”

I smile, sharp as broken glass, because that’s what he taught me. Hide the hurt. Show only the blade. Cold. Automatic. “Then I’ll make it count.”

I leave without looking back, and the office door closes behind me with a heavy thud. The file in my hand feels weightless, like the job is already done. Like the blood hasn’t even dried yet.

One man.

One mission.

One enemy.

By the time the week is over ... I expect him to be dead.
