“Hey, Tilly,” she answers. Her hair is in a messy bun, and she’s holding Luca.
“Hey, remember you were telling me about Robby breaking in?” I ask.
Her blue eyes nearly double, and she looks to her side. Through the video, I see her stand with Luca and walk into her kitchen.
“Tilly, what about it?”
“Because I know Enzo’s following me somehow without trailing me. It has to be a device, or my phone is hacked. He could be listening to this conversation, for all I know.” Out of breath, I force the accusations out.
“You sound crazy. Enzo’s not that…” she trails off and squints in thought. “Well…”
“What?”
“I don’t know. He’s a lot.”
“Did Robby hack my phone? I’ve been tearing my car apart, but I haven’t found anything. That’s the only thing I could think of,” I ramble.
She blinks a couple of times. “Robby and I stalked each other mutually, but he wouldn’t do anything to your phone. If you haven’t noticed, Enzo doesn’t really ask for help,” she answers. “Tilly, calm down.”
“How can you be so sure about Robby?” I ask. “He hacked your stuff, right?”
“He did, but I know him. He’s a good boy and wouldn’t get tangled in any scheming with Enzo,” she says. I hear Luca coo in the background, and her hands must be full.
“Well, shit! I don’t know. Enzo said something a couple of days ago that I know I didn’t tell him, but he tried gaslighting me to cover it up,” I say. “Do you know anything? Girl code. You have to tell me if you do.”
“Tilly, I don’t know anything.” She sighs and lowers her eyes. “But this isn’t surprising. Enzo is on top…of everything.”
“What happened with Mick’s sister? Did you know Enzo when they were together?”
“Girl, you are spiraling so hard right now. Yes, I knew Enzo when he dated her. It was a pretty normal relationship that fizzled out. Why?”
“Because Mick told me he tried to get her to stop taking her birth control, and we haven’t used any protection this summer. What am I going to do if I’m pregnant?”
“Are you done with him?” she quietly asks.
“I want to believe that he isn’t keeping tabs on me like that, but I just don’t know,” I answer. “If this is all in my head, then no, I’m not. But if he’s been tracking me?”
Appa sighs. “This is a mess.” Her eyes dart from the screen. “Shit, I have to run. Ember’s getting into the freaking glue. Look, I won’t say anything about this to Robby.” She pauses. “Or Enzo. I don’t want to freak you out, but Enzo’s going to know something’s up with you. He’s one of the most surgically observant people I’ve ever met.”
And he’d totally do something like this.
My stomach is more unsettled after hanging up with her, but I refocus on my car. I turn on the flashlight on my phone and check the wheel wells. I really don’t want to get under my car, but I will if I have to, like Mick did when he worked on the starter.
I gasp.
Mick!
I pull out my phone again and go to my call history. I can’t drive to Mick’s shop if Enzo is tracking my car, but Mick might come to me. I swipe through my calls, and damn, Enzo’s name dominates this list. I land on Mick’s number from calling when my car was ready after the starter replacement. It rings a few times.
“This is Mick,” he answers.
“Hey, it’s Tilly.”
“Oh, hey. Everything alright?”
“Um, I’m not sure. Did Enzo have access to my car when it was in the shop? It might sound crazy, but I think you were right that he’s following me. Like something is planted in my car.”
“Yeah, actually. He stopped by the day after he dropped your car off. He wasn’t here long, though. He looked inside your car when it was on the lift,” he says.
