“Right, let’s get Andy and Reed back here. We’ve got a mission to plan,” Steve announced, and Damon blew out a breath, the heavy weight in his chest easing a little. It wouldn’t lessen totally until he had Margot back in his arms.
He and his team waited until the sun had set before making their move. They worked more effectively under the cover of darkness. Steve had contacted the police and advised them on the situation before they cleared the occupants of the houses surrounding Ivan’s mother’s place. Now they were down the street, ready to leap into action the moment Steve gave them the all clear. They had a good working relationship with the authorities, and probably had more leeway than any other security firm in the city. It helped that their relationship with Bayden was known, as well.
Damon adjusted his combat vest, adrenaline pumping through him knowing that in the house across from where he stood, the woman who owned his heart was in there. He had no idea what condition he’d find her in, but whatever she’d gone through, he’d be there to help her recover from it. To always be by her side.
“Team two in position,” Andy’s low voice came over the comms. He and Reed had set up position at the back of the property. Drone images Wilt had obtained had shown a laneway at the back of the property which gave them access, and there were some large trees which would mask their presence.
He and Steve would go through the front. The plan was to casually knock on the door, because they believed Ivan wanted to maintain nothing was wrong. At least that was how they hoped it would play out.
“Copy, team one in place to make contact.” Steve looked over to him, and he indicated to his team leader that he was more than ready for this to be over.
With a nod, they made their way across the road. Damon veered off to the right to take cover behind a large bush. It gave him a good view of the front door. The only plus with the house being so old and not modernized in any way, was the garden had a lot of mature bushes and trees, which were the perfect cover.
Once Damon was in position, Steve knocked, the sound echoing through the still night.
Would Ivan answer?
A few seconds later, the door opened a fraction, but enough for him to confirm it was Ivan. He may have only met the guy once, but he remembered him.
“Confirm identity,” he murmured into his comms.
“Yeah?”
“Are you Ivan Darcy?”
“Who’s asking?”
“I’m looking for Margot Reid.”
From his vantage point, he was able to see the way Ivan’s eyes widened. No doubt Steve did too.
“Who?”
Damn the guy was good, but they were better.
“Margot Reid, we know you have her,” Steve stated, widening his stance. A subtle non-threatening move, but enough to let Ivan know he was ready for anything.
“I used to live next door to a Margot Reid, but I don’t know her anymore. Now, if you’ll excuse me—” Ivan made a move to close the door, but Steve’s booted foot prevented it from happening.
“We found the gate, Ivan.”
In a second, the door opened further, and Ivan pushed at Steve. It was all Damon needed, and he leaped from behind the bush and tackled Ivan to the ground; the man’s body landing with a quiet thud. “Don’t move, asshole.” He bent Ivan’s arms behind his back, pulling it a little harder than was necessary. The man yelped, but Damon didn’t care. All he wanted was Margot. “Where is she?”
“You don’t deserve her! She belongs to me!” Ivan yelled.
Damon was aware of Steve coming up to him, and of the rest of his team talking over the comms, advising they’d breached the back.
“I’ve got him.” Steve squatted down and placed zip ties around Ivan’s wrists. “You go inside and get your girl.”
Damon had one more thing to say to Ivan. “I know I don’t deserve her, but let me tell you one thing, Margot belongs to no one but herself.”
He sprung up and strode through the front door with only one mission on his mind—finding Margot.
