The screen had changed, and now displayed the location where they’d stopped Camille, including the surrounds with an arrow pointing to where they believed the shot was taken, as well as the locations of where they were all situated. Considering a couple of them had been subduing Camille, along with him and Andy protecting Margot and Narelle, respectively, the person’s aim had been impeccable.
Given the picture in front of them, there was no possible way Margot could’ve seen the sniper. The sniper may have seen her through their scope, looking in their direction before they’d taken the shot, but it wouldn’t have bothered them, because they would know they were protected from the average person’s line of sight.
“Right, so what does that leave? I mean do you have any information that connects the person who took out Camille to who she was working for?” Damon asked.
That was the one thing that still bugged them all, that they hadn’t been able to find out which organization Camille had been associated with. Narelle had mentioned how Camille had talked about someone assisting her, but she hadn’t expanded on it. They’d been hoping to get some information from Camille herself, but she’d been taken out, and there was only one reason for that.
They didn’t want to be found. Not surprising, considering what they were doing.
“No, it’s something we’re still working on,” Bayden conceded, looking tired, as if it was all getting too much for him.
Damon could understand that. When he’d been in the Army and doing the covert operations required of his job as an SAS soldier, it had been depressing how often they thought they were getting in front and reducing the number of shitty assholes in the world, only for another four to pop up.
“What about Viktor Koznovič? Has there been any connection between his organization and the traffickers in Asia?” Andy asked.
Bayden shook his head. “There hasn’t been a peep out of Viktor since he denied any connection with the woman who was taken into custody after she took Steffanie Price. Alliez knows it’s bullshit, but they’re happy he’s slinked back to Russia. After how close he’d been to their firm, they’re happy he’s quiet.”
“They can’t believe that he’s going to stay there, do they?” Damon didn’t believe an organization like Alliez Security would be that naïve. They’d worked with them a lot over the past year, and those guys were top operatives.
“Far from it. They know he’ll pop back up eventually, they’re just enjoying the peace it’s given them.”
“Understandable,” murmured Reed.
“This still doesn’t solve who’s after Margot.” It may be horrible, but Damon had been hoping that Bayden would have some answers for them. Something concrete that they hadn’t been able to uncover themselves.
“It doesn’t, but we won’t stop looking.” Steve looked at him, determination firing in his boss’s eyes.
“I know.” And Damon did, because every man around the table considered Margot part of their family, and now that they all knew how important she was to him, none of them would rest until the culprit was found.
Chapter
Twenty-One
It had been a long day. No, it had been a long week for Margot. The only bright side about it all was the way her and Damon’s relationship had evolved. The nights were amazing. Actually, so were the days. He’d been so much more open with his affection toward her. Everyone at the office knew they were together, and she’d had texts from Tabitha, Lauren, Narelle, and Indigo all saying they were happy that Damon finally got his head out of his ass and acknowledged how much he wanted her.
Margot had been surprised that they’d all seen what she hadn’t. Or maybe she’d chosen not to see it, because she didn’t want to believe that Damon felt anything for her.
The only downside was they still didn’t know who the AirTag belonged to. Wilt’s shoulder surgery had been, unexpectedly, pushed forward, and he’d had a day to prepare for it. He was out of hospital, and in a bit of pain. According to Indigo, though, he was planning to come into the office the next day even though it was the weekend, to see what he could find. Margot didn’t want him to ruin his weekend, but he was adamant, and Damon promised he would come in and make sure that he didn’t work too long.
“You ready to go, Little Pearl?”
Warmth spread through her at hearing Damon’s pet name for her. “I should find out what your name means.”
She reached down to her bottom drawer to get her purse, but paused, remembering that it was now in a locked box in the secured cupboard behind her. Damon hadn’t been happy with where she’d stored her purse for years, and had convinced Steve he needed to make sure she had somewhere safe to keep it. She wasn’t about to tell him that today was the first time she remembered to keep it locked away.
“I hate to break it to you, but there’s nothing special about my name.”
Margot hooked her purse over her shoulder and studied the man who was slowly letting her see the real him. He was so much more relaxed with her now. “Hmm, I think I’d better do my own research.”
He shrugged. “If you want. Now, let’s get out of here.”
Damon held out his hand, and she took it, loving the way his fingers closed protectively around hers. They silently made their way to his car, but she was conscious of Damon looking around, making sure everything was fine.
There hadn’t been any more messages, but there’d been a couple of weeks’ gap between the envelope that had arrived in the mail and then the email. The person was biding their time; Margot felt it. Perhaps she was finally picking up on some of the intuition the guys she worked with continually talked about.
Once she was settled in the car, she pulled her phone out of her bag and opened an internet browser. “Right, let’s see what I can find.”
“I’m telling you, it really isn’t that exciting.” Damon glanced at her quickly before he returned his attention to driving them out of the parking garage.
