Eighteen

Sunlight filtered through the small gap in Damon’s blinds, hitting him like it did every morning. Normally it didn’t bother him, because he got up early most days to do PT, but he didn’t want to get up that morning. He wanted the night to go on for so much longer.

He looked down at the woman sleeping in his arms. He should feel regret for what he’d done. But he didn’t. He was no longer keeping away from Margot.

Whatever happened between them, if they didn’t have anything more than this night, then he would live with it. Although, he didn’t think that would be the case. He believed that if Margot hadn’t wanted to be with him, she wouldn’t have.

He pulled her closer to him and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. She stirred in his arms. “Morning,” she mumbled.

“Morning, Little Pearl.” Because he couldn’t help himself, he kissed her on the mouth, knowing that it would be dangerous, but he’d always walked into danger with his eyes wide open.

Her body softened beneath his, and he rolled so he was on his back, and Margot was sprawled on top. A place he was more than happy for her to be.

His cock rested against her, and she did a little wiggle making him groan against her mouth.

Would he ever get enough of her? He didn’t think so.

Her touch and taste were addictive.

Even though he wanted to take her again, he controlled himself. He hadn’t exactly been gentle with her the previous evening after their first time. Not that Margot had complained, she’d been with him every step of the way.

“I don’t want to do this but, we need to stop,” he murmured against her mouth.

“I suppose so,” she agreed and snuggled into his side, testing his resolve.

The moment they stepped out of the bedroom, the real world would intrude. The person who was after Margot was still out there. The issue with his aunt, the one he hadn’t allowed himself to think about, needed to be sorted. He’d been ignoring the messages she’d been sending, but he couldn’t keep doing that.

There was also the fact he believed something was going on with Bayden, and he wasn’t telling them. Not that he was obligated to, but they were friends. They’d been with him when he got seriously hurt on the last mission they’d carried out. Shit like that lingered and affected everyone differently.

Soft fingers brushed across his forehead, and he closed his eyes, falling into the light touch.

“You’re thinking hard. Can I help?” Margot asked softly.

Her offer was freely given, without strings. Did he want to burden her with everything that was going on in his mind?

He’d had plenty of opportunities to tell her about his aunt, but he hadn’t wanted to spoil what was building between them. He definitely didn’t want to tell her in his bedroom where they’d shared one of the best nights of his life.

For years, it had only been him, and he hadn’t had anyone to share his thoughts and worries with. Now, though, he did. And if he wanted a future with Margot, then he had to open himself up to her. To let her see the real him.

“Yeah, you can, but I’ll tell you over breakfast.”

Her gaze drifted over him, as if trying to work out if he was saying the words to placate her, or if he meant them. He withstood her attention, and when her focus landed back on his face, he held it so that she could see he was going to be an open book with her from now on. “Okay. I’m going to shower.”

Her easy acceptance of him and what he told her was what he loved about Margot. That, and the trust that she gave him freely. A trust he didn’t deserve, but wasn’t going to reject.

As the bathroom door closed behind her, his thoughts sunk in.

What he loved about Margot.

Her acceptance wasn’t the only thing he loved. He loved everything about her. The person she was. The happiness she lived life with–even if it had been missing the last few months–was still inside of her and a part of her. It was starting to shine through again, and he wanted to nurture that so she didn’t live in the darkness her experience had given her.

He loved Margot Reid.

Had probably loved her from the moment he’d met her, but had been too stubborn to allow himself to admit it. He’d fought it, but in the end, the fight had been pointless, because she was always in the forefront of his mind.

She was always meant to be his.

How did she feel about him though?
