“Can you trace the owner of it, Wilt?” Steve asked.
“Not sure. I think it’s possible, but it’s going to take some time. But what we can do?”He reached across and opened the device, pulling the battery out. “Without this, the signal will be lost, so the last place that will register–if they’re watching it religiously–will be here at our office.”
“That’s all well and good, but this asshole knows where Margot is staying now. The message in the email said as such, along with the photo,” Damon grumbled.
“This is true, but it can also works to our advantage.” Steve sat back and looked thoughtful.
“How so?” Damon couldn’t see any positive out of it, then again, his emotions were likely blinding him. Blocking his usual analytical, unemotional way of looking at a situation. Things that had always helped him in the past.
“You’ve got cameras set up at your place, right?” Andy queried.
Damon shook his head. “I don’t. Never have.”
It was as though he’d dropped a grenade on his friends as they all stared at him with incredulous looks. Every single one of them had a security system installed. Had beefed it up after their partners had been kidnapped or hurt.
Damon had never seen the point, as he’d figured he’d always stay single. Even after Margot had moved in with him, he hadn’t given a thought about it. He’d been arrogant in thinking that the person who was after Margot wouldn’t find her.
How wrong he’d been.
“Do you think you should now?” Steve said mildly.
“Yes.”
“I’ll get it sorted, and they’ll start installing it in the next forty-five minutes,” Wilt said. “I’ll just need your house keys.”
Damon reached into his pockets and tossed them at Wilt. He lifted his arm to catch them, wincing a little as the keys landed in his open palm. “Fuck, sorry man.”
“It’s fine,” his friend said, but they all knew that once Wilt had his shoulder surgery, everything could change within their team dynamic, but that wasn’t something he needed to think about right now.
“Okay, so what do we have so far when it comes to who might be after Margot?” Steve asked.
“The sniper who took out Camille. The person Camille had mentioned to Narelle who helped her out with her first kidnapping attempt. If that guy was part of the organization that trafficked people, it would be more likely he’d be after Narelle.” Steve looked over to Andy. “I don’t think that’s the case, because they tend to distance themselves from people who put their organization in jeopardy, so I believe Narelle’s safe.”
“Not to mention, we believe it was that organization that eliminated Camille so she couldn’t talk and give us and the police intel on who she worked for,” Andy said, steel in his voice. “But I’ll warn Narelle, and will check that everything is in working order at home.”
“Wilt said that we can eliminate that the photos came from a drone, considering we found this tracking device. The person who was following her could’ve taken the photos with a decent telephoto lens. So that takes out the person who Louelle worked with as well.” Damon was pleased the list of who might be after Margot wasn’t long, but that didn’t mean they had concrete leads on who it might be.
“What is everyone’s thoughts on the sniper being after her?” Reed asked, tapping his fingers on the table.
“Not sure. From what Margot told me, she didn’t get a good look at him, but the sniper could’ve seen her looking in his direction as he was preparing his shot to eliminate Camille. The reason could be as simple as him wanting to get rid of loose ends. Andy’s focus, along with the rest of us, had been elsewhere, and not in the direction where the shot had come from.” Damon laid out the facts because he’d given it a lot of thought. There was part of him that kept telling himself not to discount the possibility the person wanted Margot out of the picture, and he was going to listen to it.
“Okay, we’ll continue to have him at the top of our suspect list. Have we asked Margot if there are any former boyfriends or family members that might have something against her and want to scare her this way?” Steve looked at Damon, and he shook his head.
“We haven’t talked about her past relationships, and from what she’s told me, she’s not close to her parents, who live in the Northern Territory.” The thought of another man touching Margot, even if it had been in the past, wasn’t something that sat well with him.
“I know you’re going to be busy looking into the owner of that device, Wilt, but are you able to look into Margot’s parents?” Steve asked.
“Do you think that’s necessary, and shouldn’t you ask Margot about it before we do that?” Damon didn’t think Margot would be happy about it at all, even if she and her parents’ relationship wasn’t on the best terms.
“You’re right, this is Margot, so we should check with her,” Steve conceded. “Right, we have a plan, let’s keep going on this. Also, Bayden will be coming in again in a couple of days, we all need to be present for the meeting.”
Everyone nodded and then left the room, leaving him and Wilt, who had started tapping away at his computer.
Damon pushed down all the emotions and feelings for Margot that were swirling within him and thought through everything they’d discussed. He couldn’t help but think he was missing something, but what that something was, he had no idea.
