“Very good,” I say. “Now we know you can read. We were always a bit worried about that.”

His expression would qualify as unreadable to someone who hasn't known him their whole life.

I settle deeper into the chair, enjoying myself. “Before I buy it, I want everything on the building and the unit. Ownership history, structural reports, permits, repairs, assessments, litigation, anything that has ever gone wrong or might potentially go wrong. I also want a full independent inspection.”

Lorenzo looks at me for a second.

I continue. “And I mean full. I do not want someone walking around for two hours checking outlets and telling me the faucets work. Structure, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, windows, fire systems, elevators, whatever applies to the unit and whatever we can reasonably inspect in the building.”

“We can do that.”

“I know. I also know you have all that information in your head. If you send me some numbers, I can get started on that.”

Lorenzo picks up a pen and writes the address on the pad beside him. “I can take care of it. I’ll have someone start on the history today and arrange inspections with the building.”

“Better for me.”

“You want anything on the seller?”

“Everything. I’m buying an off-market property from someone I don’t know. I want to know who I’m dealing with.”

“That I can take care of.”

“Good. Great.” I stand.

Lorenzo looks at me.

I know that look. I have known that look all of my life. I put one hand in my pocket and wait.

He says nothing.

Neither do I.

His eyes narrow slightly.

I sigh. “What?”

“So you found a place.”

“We established that.”

“Already.”

“Yes.”

His gaze stays on me. “They must be really good over at The Meridian Group.”

Ah. Here we go.

I give him my best smile. The one that has gotten me through negotiations, dinners, and many a tedious meeting.

“They are. It was a good acquisition.”

Lorenzo leans back in his chair.

“That Randall Shaw,” he says. “He’s really good at his job, isn’t he?”

My smile stays exactly where it is. “I didn’t see houses with Randall.”
