“Then what is?”

I stare at him, in disbelief that he doesn't understand.

“My career is over.”

For once, he looks genuinely confused rather than amused. “Why?”

“Why?” I ask incredulously. “Because I slept with a client! Not only that, you're one of the owners of the company.”

“And?”

I wait for the rest of that realization to reach him.

It apparently does not.

“Do you genuinely not understand why that is a problem?”

He leans one hip against the island, still maddeningly relaxed. “Are you planning to walk into Meridian and tell Randall what happened?”

“Of course not.”

“Then how exactly is your career over?”

I open my mouth.

Close it.

Open it again.

“My integrity—”

“Is fully intact.”

My jaw drops.

He says it casually while standing barefoot, leaning against the island where he had me naked and spread out only hours ago.

I point at him. “Finish putting your clothes on.”

His eyes drop to himself, then back to me. A smirk appears. “I have pants on.”

“Your shirt is hanging open.”

“You told me to put clothes on. I’m making progress.”

“Please make more.”

He laughs and starts buttoning his shirt while I step into my shoes, though I'm not sure how much it's going to help my image right now. My hair is falling into my face, and one side of my shirt is still untucked.

“My dignity is absolutely not intact,” I say. “Neither is my integrity.”

Diego tucks in his shirt and reaches for his belt. “Your dignity seemed perfectly healthy last night.”

I close my eyes. “Oh, God.”

“Yes, that's exactly what it sounded like.” There’s a laugh in his voice.

“Just stop.”
