Chapter 35
They’d made love once already, but if these past nights were any indication, that would not be the last time today. Indeed, as they lay in each other’s arms, Ainsley was only partially surprised when Tor suddenly picked her up as if she weighed the same as a bar of soap. Lifting her above him, he let her hands fall to each side to support herself.
“Make love to me,” he said, pushing her hair away from her face.
“I?” She’d not done this before. Ainsley glanced down. He was hard already. His stomach muscles flexed as she perused him with her eyes. Tor reached down between them and guided himself into her. But this time, it was Ainsley who set their pace. At first, she moved hesitantly. Then, becoming accustomed to her position, she sat up, no longer supported.
And did precisely as he asked her to do.
Moving her body, her hips, Ainsley took him deeper and faster with every thrust of his own. She’d not have expected it to feel much different, but as she moved, and with every sound of pleasure, every one of Tor’s moans, she became more and more emboldened.
“Oh God, Ainsley.” He grabbed her hips then, guiding her. But Ainsley needed no guidance.
“I am meant for this,” she said, not really understanding her own words. “I am meant for ye.”
Tor released one hand from her hip and brought it to her core. She jolted at the touch, not expecting it. But as he flicked, Ainsley became even more and more emboldened. She cried out his name, not once, but as the clenching began, two, three times. They moved in such perfect rhythm that by the end, Ainsley was certain they could not come together any faster.
“Tor,” she called one last time before near collapsing on him as her husband roared her name. He flipped them. Still joined, Tor now on top of her. He did not move for some time. But then, slowly at first, he hardened. And then began to move.
After the second time they both found release, Tor did break apart from her. He lay next to her, eyes closed, shaking his hand.
“That is just . . . no’ done, Ainsley.”
Flipping onto her side, she watched him as he recovered. “I’d wondered if such a thing were typical.”
“Nay, lass. Naught of this is typical. No’ making love twice in such a short time. No’ enduring such a crushing defeat as our inability to find Marta and Ian after coming so close and then forgetting all of it to enjoy a night such as this, filled with the most incredible pleasure possible.”
“I am sorry for it,” she said. “The search. No’ the night of pleasure.”
Tor reached out and tucked a strand of his wife’s hair behind her ears. “As am I, Ainsley.”
“Do ye think they are safe?”
If only he knew the answer to that question. “I do worry, after today, what may have happened. Did they see us and run? Is there another reason they didnae board their ship?”
“Something involving Father Godfrey?”
He frowned, unable to hide his suspicions. “I like no’ that he was here in Berwick and lied about it.”
“I will admit, ’tis odd.”
Tor sighed. “We can no’ stay, Ainsley. Though I wish it were otherwise, we need to return home. To tell the others what we’ve learned and prepare them before the next full moon.”
“How can we leave them here?”
He frowned. “’Tis difficult to find someone who does no’ wish to be found.”
“So we must leave Berwick,” she said, resigned.
“Aye, lass. We must.”
“This feud has cost our clans much,” she murmured.
“And yet, if no’ for it, we wouldn’t be here.”
Ainsley leaned up, kissed her husband softly, deeply. The thought of it, of them never being married or finding such joy in each other’s arms . . . she pulled back and lay on his arm, staring into the same eyes that had shot fire and hatred at her in the hall that first day. Now, however, they were filled with love.
Uncertain how he would respond, Ainsley took a deep breath. She was navigating the world alone no longer. And while she had not wanted to need him, Ainsley could admit that she did. She could control much around her, but some things, like the way she felt for this man . . . Ainsley was powerless against such a force. So she would stop fighting it and accept it instead.
