I wiped beneath my eyes. “You’re a bitch.”
“I’ve been called worse.”
That finally made me laugh.
Klair let me have it then she said, “I don’t hate you.”
My smile disappeared. “I know.”
“I think what you’re doing is fucked up.”
“I know.”
“I think you’re being stupid.”
“Clearly.”
“I think this man has told you a bunch of shit you can’t verify because you’re in love with him.”
I looked through the windshield. “Probably.”
“And if this blows up in your face, I reserve the right to say I told you so.”
“That’s supportive.”
The secret was out. At least with one person and strangely, I could breathe.
I started the car again. “Can I ask you something?”
“No.”
I frowned. “You don’t even know what it is.”
“After this conversation, I’m protecting my peace.”
“Klair.”
“What?”
I hesitated. “Would you still meet him?”
The phone was quiet long enough that I checked the screen to make sure the call hadn’t dropped.
“Klair?”
“You cannot be fucking serious.”
I bit my lip. “I am.”
“Blair.”
“I want you to meet him.”
“Why?”
Because I wanted somebody who loved me to see what I saw. Because maybe if Klair met him, she would understand. Maybe she’d see how he looked at me.
“I just do.”
