“Do you always ask invasive questions?”
“Fair.”
I relaxed. That was another thing I realized about Nash. He didn’t push when I pushed back. He didn’t have a wounded ego. He just adjusted and that made me suspicious. A man could breathe respectfully and I’d assume it was a form of manipulation.
Our server came and Nash ordered bourbon while I ordered wine.
He looked at my glass when it arrived. “Red?”
“Problem?”
“No. You just seem like a white wine person, but I honestly thought you’d order something heavier.”
“Why?”
“You have heavy energy.”
My brows lifted. “Excuse me?”
“That sounded worse out loud.”
“It sounded terrible.”
“I meant intense.”
“That’s not better.”
He laughed and I liked his laugh.
“So,” I said, “one child?”
“One.”
“Eight?”
His brow lifted. “Damn. You remembered.”
“Yes.”
I did not mention the online research. God was still working on me.
“What’s your child’s name?”
“His name is Eli.”
I smiled. “Are you close?”
“Very.”
“Weekends?”
“Shared schedule.”
“With your ex-wife?”
“Yes.”
There it was. My body did the thing that consisted of tension. Nash caught it.
