“He cooks every night?” Klair asked.

“Almost.”

Ravenna smiled affectionately. “He loves cooking. Even when he’s exhausted.”

Caleb finally spoke. “Not every night.”

“Most nights.” She touched his arm. “He works himself half to death, comes home, makes sure we eat, then disappears into that damn room answering emails until midnight.”

Midnight. My stomach dropped. The time Caleb’s texts usually slowed. The time I’d assumed he fell asleep at his apartment. The apartment I barely visited anymore. Because he was busy, I was busy, and because we’d decided constantly being together had started putting pressure on us. Because we’d agreed having our own spaces was healthy. Because— Oh my God. Had he been going home and not the apartment?

My heart wasn’t breaking. It was doing something worse that I couldn’t explain.

Klair smiled sweetly. “So you’re telling me this man is rich, successful and cooks?”

Ravenna laughed. “Most days.”

Klair looked at Caleb. “Damn. Somebody hit the jackpot.”

Ravenna nodded. “He has his moments.”

“Don’t they all?”

Klair looked directly at me and I wanted to strangle her.

Ravenna laughed again at Klair. “Are you married?”

“Absolutely the fuck not.”

I snorted and Ravenna laughed harder. “Dating?”

“Not at all.”

“Not interested?”

Klair shrugged. “People require too much maintenance. I have plants.”

I nearly choked and Ravenna turned toward me. “What about you?”

Fuck.

My stomach dropped and Caleb looked like he was going to pass out.

“Are you dating?”

I opened my mouth and Klair beat me to it. “Unfortunately.”

I turned slowly. “Klair.”

“What?”

Ravenna smiled. “Oh?”

“Yeah,” Klair continued. “He’s a HUGE piece of shit.”

Caleb’s eyes widened and I bit the inside of my cheek.

Ravenna burst out laughing. “Damn!”
