So do I.
When he speaks again, his voice is quieter.
"Your magic is waking up."
A laugh escapes me, but it sounds wrong. Too sharp.
"My what…is doing what now?"
"Maren."
"No. You don’t get to say something like that in your calm lumberjack voice and expect me to just move past it."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"Yeah." His eyes stay on mine. "I do."
Evelyn shifts slightly.
Sid growls.
Not his normal annoyed-with-humanity growl.
The other one.
Low. Deep. Wrong coming from an animal that weighs twelve pounds on a generous day.
Evelyn stops moving.
I notice.
So does Gage.
My stomach knots tighter.
"And what does she want with me?"
Gage’s expression changes.
It’s subtle, but I’ve spent six months watching this man pretend he doesn’t have facial expressions. I know his tells.
This one is worry.
"She wants to help."
"That sounded rehearsed."
"It wasn’t."
"Then try again."
His jaw works.
"The Lantern Coven knows about people like you."
"People like me?"
