I laugh, because the only other option is climbing under the table.

"Fantastic. Love that for me."

"You shouldn't sleep alone tonight."

I blink. "Excuse me?"

"Stay at my place."

I set the mug down very carefully. "Gage Corbett. Are you using my haunting to get me into your bed?"

His eyes go wide. For the first time since I've known him, I've caught the man completely off guard.

"No. Nothing like that. I meant in the guest room."

"How chivalrous."

The tips of his ears go pink.

Oh. That's a gift.

"You're blushing."

"I am not."

"You are. All the way to your ears."

"Thanks for noticing. Ugh."

"You're a little bit adorable and it's ruining my whole worldview."

His face does something horrified, and I laugh, and for two whole seconds the fear lets go of my ribs.

Then Sid's head snaps up.

His claws sink into Gage's thigh. Gage doesn't flinch. He goes still and listens.

I stop laughing. "What?"

He jumps to his feet and Sid drops to the floor. Both of them face the back door.

"Gage?"

He lifts one finger to his lips.

The bottom falls out of my stomach.

A sound comes from the other side of the door. Slow. Patient.

Scrape.

Pause.

Scrape.

Pause.

Gage moves between me and the door, silent for a man his size. I lift the tire iron off the table with both hands.
