I burst out laughing. “Yeah, that is definitely something that we’d do. Or at least a couple of us. Tell Mr. R that if they ever need backup out here, we want to be it. I’d like to meet them.”

Trick nods, “I can do that. When I spoke to them on the plane, just to give them a heads up that we were going to be here and when. They said it’s really rare that anyone one from the organization comes over, and they were hoping to meet us.”

Chapter Eighteen

Trick

They actually said that they rarely get people from our side of the organization over here, and honestly I don’t know what to make of it. I wasn’t aware that there was another side to the organization. Different departments, sure, but the way Oberon worded it made it seem like more than that. I don’t know how to explain it, and I definitely don’t know how to word it to make sense to the others, so I’m not going to try.

It’s made me curious enough that I am planning on asking Mr. R about it when I get the chance.

For some reason, it feels like it should be an in-person kind of conversation. So it might be a while before I get the answers that I’m looking for, but it’s piqued my interest enough that I know that I’m not going to forget to ask the next time that I do see him in person.

I would really like to meet the team here. They seem like our sort of people.

There are more rumors than the one that Atlas mentioned, and the other teams all seem to have a very strong opinion of the team here, mainly that they’re really weird. Much like us, and Zemi’s team as well, actually, none of the other teams at the organization like the team here.

That just makes me like them more.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that we’ve been with the organization for years, Raid and the guys even longer than we have, and the other teams still have a problem with us. So much so that it’s passed on to new teams and agents that have come into the organization, and they all dislike us too.

I have no idea why.

None of us have done anything that could possibly warrant that level of distrust. Quite the opposite, actually.

We still try to avoid using the other teams in our jobs unless we really have to, and Mr. R understands why.

Essentially, when it comes to the team out here, it all boils down to the fact that there are several things that make me incredibly curious, and I would like to meet them for those reasons.

“Actually, could we push the flight until late tomorrow evening?” Pete asks, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Eli isn’t back for a few days yet, and quite honestly I need as many distractions as I can get. I like the feel of this place. I would like to have a proper look around.”

“It is beautiful. We rarely actually get to explore the places that we go to since we’re usually too busy and on a tight schedule,” Jensen agrees immediately as he stares down at the ground, trying to make sure that he’s not going to trip over something again. In theory, it’s a good idea, except it does mean that he isn’t looking where he’s going, and that’s almost as unsafe. He looks up just in time to miss a low tree branch and adds, “I wouldn’t mind exploring a little bit tomorrow before we head home.”

“I need to get some supplies for Wyn anyway,” Luc says with a fond smile.

“I would love to try some of their local food and get some ideas for some things that I can try at home,” Rafe says excitedly.

“Sounds good to me,” I reply. I wouldn’t mind having a look around. “I’ll let Mr. R know when we get back. We can head out relatively early into the tiny town here and see what we can find.”

“It’s pretty much just one street, isn’t it?” Riot asks.

“It looked like it when we drove through,” Rafe replies.

“Oh thank fuck, I see the cars,” Ever exclaims, making us chuckle as we head toward them.

The drive back is quiet, and I spend the time mostly really looking forward to exploring the little town tomorrow. I love finding art pieces whenever we do a job somewhere different, but I usually end up not having enough time to really find something that I love, or any time at all, come to think of it. While a few extra hours is not a lot of time, it is far more time than I usually get, and I am determined to find something that I love.

I know for a fact that Ever is going to be looking for a keepsake too. She usually settles for things like rocks that she’s managed to pick up and has got them all displayed on a shelf in her room and labeled so she remembers where they have come from.

I would try to make sure that we got a few hours in all of the places that we go, but the majority of the time it’s simply logistically impossible. I think Pete’s idea of spending more time here is brilliant. It’s a nice distraction from worrying about Elijah and the guys, and I am worrying about them. There are only a few reasons why Elijah would go to Mr. R instead of waiting until he could get hold of me. All of them mean that their job has gotten extremely complicated and even more dangerous than it was already. Especially if they’re getting the clearance to come back here for a visit, and a short one at that.

It means they’re going deep undercover.

Deep enough that they will most likely be able to check in only once every few months.

Poor Pete.

He has us, of course he does, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that he’s going to be missing his person.
