It feels like we have been here for ages.

Unless I have a gun in my hands, I find this kind of waiting tedious. To be honest, I don’t always find it that easy when I have a gun in my hands either. I struggle to be still. I don’t like it.

Ace is the same way, which is why we’re never allowed to be on a stakeout just the two of us. Jynx and Ever have forbidden it for safety reasons.

To be fair, it’s probably a good decision. We were trying to blend in on one of the stakeouts that we did do together and ended up getting into a rather heated argument with someone about the way that they treated the barista, and then it escalated, and the cops got called, and Mr. R had to bail us out, and we had to explain what happened.

It was a weird day.

It was better than the time that we accidentally, on purpose, started a bar fight because we were bored. We caught the fucker we were supposed to, but Trick and Rome wanted us to wait it out a bit longer.

Whoops.

Chapter Fifteen

Jensen

That was one of the few times that we had them with us on an organization mission.

I love it when Ace and the others do a job with us. It’s more like the old days, before we became legally the good guys. Every now and then I feel like it’s gotten a little bit stagnant. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love it still. I always will. I get to help people in a way that satisfies the darker part of who I am.

It’s just a little tedious sometimes.

Of course, whenever I do feel like that, something will then happen that pulls it far away from the tedious and straight back into purely enjoying it. I’ve talked to the others about it, and we all feel the same sometimes. I think it’s just a part of growing up, I guess.

That feeling of missing it does become a little bit more apparent whenever we’re with Jynx and the guys. They’re still doing it, and D is as well. I do wonder how our lives would have been if we hadn’t decided to work for the organization. They knew who we were and what skills we had, so we would have been watched closely, and probably at some point we would have ended up being brought in or on the run.

At the end of the day, it’s safer than the way that we used to do things. There’s a lot more security, and we’re able to support ourselves legally and very, very well.

The odd job that we do with Jynx, or even D, scratches that itch that we have. Things like what Cash and Luc dealt with at Zemi’s house also help, and I know they enjoyed it.

I’m still a bit gutted that I missed out on that. From what the guys said though, I would be very surprised if they don’t come back, so I hope that Saint or one of the others calls us in if they do.

Fortunately for me, this is not one of those situations where I have to remain completely still, and I can wriggle and twitch as much as my restless-ass-self needs to.

Cash drew the short straw and ended up with me, but he’s also moving between where we are and the others too. He’s making sure that all the gaps between where each pair is stationed are covered and that everyone is okay.

It's also so that if we need to, we can pass information through him without having to put the comms on.

Pete said not to risk it, so we won’t fucking risk it.

Cash volunteered to be the go-between, and I think it’s partly because my fidgeting drives him crazy after a while. He stays with me for maybe twenty minutes or so and then heads off to see one of the other groups. We’ve been here for a couple of hours now, and I’m reaching the end of what I can handle. No one has shown up, and there’s been absolutely no movement at the house.

Pete ran into an issue with the cameras, so that’s dragged it out for a bit longer than we would have liked, but we would have had to stay where we are and watch for a while anyway.

Trick doesn’t want us to head in guns blazing.

Well, we’re not using guns, that’s likely not necessary this time, but still. The point is that we have no idea what we’re walking into. We never do when we do things like this, so we’re following protocol and doing what we usually do, and that’s watching the house to see if we can get any information about what Linda is up to and who is in the house.

The more information we have, the better.

At least that was the plan.

No one is in the house, no one has come back, and there hasn’t been any movement at all.

Although that makes our job easier in the long run, it has meant that the boredom has set in far quicker.

My phone starts to ring, and I frown.
