Neither one of us moved as my body adjusted around him. We made out, both of us relaxing into it until I had to move again.

I rocked my hips forward before he took over, hands tightening on my hips as he fucked me on him, lifting me off and slamming me down. We were so hungry for each other that every movement was desperate. It was near impossible to not bite him here and now, to make him mine forever.

The lanterns around us flared bright, illuminating the night into something that resembled day. I ignored it as I pulled off his shirt. He did the same to my dress, tossing the clothing aside. He even went as far as tearing my underwear free so we were completely unrestricted.

I shivered as a cool breeze blew past, caressing our heated flesh. But he pulled me closer, his warmth warding off the chill.

He let me take the lead again as I fucked myself on him, slow and lazy as he claimed one peaked nipple in his mouth, his free hand kneading my other breast. He moaned as if I tasted delicious and damn if my perfume didn’t surround us in response.

The more he teased me, the more frantic my movements were until I was bouncing on his cock and holding his mouth to my breast. Ripples of pleasure rumbled through me as my body clenched around him.

He finally broke away from my chest and moved back to my lips, kissing me as his fingers slid between us, teasing over my clit.

My head fall back as I fucked him, body unraveling completely for this sweet, attentive beta. He made me feel so safe and loved that I couldn’t help but soak in every second with him.

With one last tease of his fingers, I came, his name falling from my lips as I shattered.

Merrick groaned, his hips snapping up one last time before he was filling me with his cum. My omega let out a shiver of satisfaction, loving the feeling of being so thoroughly claimed.

I rested my head against his shoulder, hugging him to me as our breathing and bodies calmed. I ached perfectly, and this was the most calm I’d felt in days.

“I’d ask how you liked it, but I think the lanterns told on you,” I teased. He let out a raspy chuckle as he held me closer.

“It was the best night of my life, omega,” he promised. “At least until you finally claim me as yours.”

“You’re already mine,” I said as I placed a kiss on his neck. I didn’t move again until it was too cold to stay there any longer. I managed to climb off of him, already missing him even though he was right next to me.

We both got dressed and he pulled a blanket around me.

“Good thing I like cold pasta,” I said as I snagged my forgotten container and dug into the alfredo with extra parmesan on top, just the way I liked it.

My beta paid attention.

The lanterns were back to glowing that warm light and the stars danced above us. I was so content and warm inside that the dangers we’ve been facing lately seemed so far away. I didn’t think about the mirror or the way my brother was trying to ruin my life.

He was right. I’d go crazy if I didn’t live in these moments with my men. Soak in every second we spent together.

I’d spent years obsessing over fixing my curse but I was slowly realizing that maybe life with my curse wasn’t the end of the world. It was a part of me and my magic now. It wasn’t the life I pictured as a kid, but it was mine and I was ready to own it.

For now, I was more than happy to soak in the feeling of being loved and cared for. If we lost sight of what really mattered then that was letting the curses, my brother, and the magistrate all win.

I refused to let anyone take this from me now.

“So, tell me more about shapeshifting,” I urged, eager to know everything.

He took a bite first before speaking. “Dorian asked if I ever tried to use magic or the powers of the shape that I was taking on. After hearing how you two had spoken and accepted your quirks and curses, I wanted to try. Clearly, it worked. It might be small, but for me, it’s huge.” We looked around at the lanterns. From the way they were glowing bright and steady now, I knew he was proud. As he should be.

It was funny that I could read the beta so well I knew which emotions were shining in the lantern light.

“I haven’t practiced a lot with it, but I took on Dorian’s form and was able to snap a log. With Rook I made all this and conjured the flames.”

“That’s amazing, Merrick,” I said, genuinely impressed he’d achieved so much on the first try. “Imagine what you can accomplish with some practice, too.”

“True,” he said. “But I also want to be able to protect you as myself. I think I’m going to see about having someone train me to fight. Maybe Dorian or Rook… or someone in town. Just in case we ever face someone like your brother again.”

“I hate that it’s come to this,” I said, blinking furiously as tears threatened to drop. He swiped a stray one away.

“Even if he wasn’t in the picture, a mate should know how to protect his omega.”
